Goals / Remit
ActionAid is an international anti-poverty agency which takes sides with poor people to end poverty and injustice together.
Around the world we work in local communities, listening to poor people and learning about their needs. We help them approach decision makers in their own countries, simultaneously lobbying powerful institutions such as the EU to change the international policies and regulations that contribute to the uneven distribution of wealth.
The European Union (EU) is the largest multi-lateral donor of aid in the world and the decisions made within it have major implications for the lives of millions of people living in the developing world.
ActionAid opened its EU Office in Brussels in 1999. The function of the ActionAid EU Office is to ensure that EU policies place the fight against extreme poverty and global injustice as a central concern.
Drawing on ActionAid’s experience working in Asia, Africa, Europe and in the Americas, the ActionAid EU office focuses its efforts on optimising the political space for development within the EU by working with other civil society organisations in favour of human rightsMain EU files targeted
The ActionAid EU office works on three of the four ActionAid priorities, in its new 2028 Strategy, from a EU perspective:
1. Address the structural causes of violence against women and girls and secure women's economic justice
2. Ensure increased civic participation and state accountability for the redistribution of resources and delivery of quality, gender-responsive public services
3. Strengthen resilient livelihoods and secure climate justice
In the framework of the resilient livelihoods work, ActionAid EU office follows closely the EU development policy in the field of agriculture and food security. It is notably seeking to ensure that the implementation of the May 2014 Communication on the role of private sector in development includes adequate criteria and safeguards to ensure that the private sector effectively contributes to sustainable development and human rights. We also seek to ensure a strengthening of the rules on European financial institutions to avoid them being supportive of projects that end up being land grabs or further incentivise smallholder farmers' marginalisation.
In the framework of the redistribution of resources workstream, ActionAid is following the initiatives announced by the European Commission in the field of taxation. Our objective is to try and ensure that the interests of developing countries are taken into account in the framework of the proposed reforms, so that they can strengthen their domestic resources, needed to pay for health, education and other gender-responsive public services.
Throughout our work, we emphasise women’s rights and the need for any EU policy to promote the rights of women and girls – this can range from the role of private sector in development to access to land. We are also increasingly working about the impact of the EU trade and investment policy on women's rights in the Global South.
As part of CONCORD, ActionAid contributes to CONCORD work on policy coherence for development and the implementation of Agenda 2030/the Sustainable Development Goals.Address

Other financial info
The financial information above relates to the Brussels office of ActionAid International. For financial information related to the organisation overall, please see aggregated statement of financial activities on www.actionaid.org under 'Who We Are' 'How We Work'.
The ActionAid EU office did not receive any funding from the EU institutions (see reply above). But many ActionAid affiliates in different regions of the world have benefited from EU funding in 2017.
We started 2017 with more staff on the EU advocacy, but one full time equivalent contract ended mid-2017 and could not be extended or replaced; while another person who was contributing part time to the EU advocacy work left in September 2017 as part of a broader restructuring in the organisation. The costs related to the time spent by those persons on activities covered by the transparency register have been included in the 143,433 euros, including 10% of the compensation package for the person who left in September and was previously devoting 10% of her time to EU influencing work. So, since October 2017, only one person is still working on EU advocacy in the Brussels office of ActionAid. A new staff joined in August 2018, for an initial one year period. -

Communication activities
We don't plan ActionAid publications focusing in particular on the EU this year, but ActionAid is an active member of Concord, the platform bringing together all european development NGOs. In that farmework of Concord, we contribute to various publications. Last year, in 2018, we contributed in particular to a Concord report on Policy Coherence for Development and Impact assessments, as well as a Concord report on gender and trade.
Other activities
Drawing on ActionAid’s experience working in Asia, Africa and in the Americas, the ActionAid EU office focuses its efforts on optimising the political space for development within the EU. We work with other civil society organisations to seek justice on rights.
End 2016, ActionAid has adopted its new Global Strategy "Strategy 2028: Action for Global Justice". Under that new strategy, the organisation's overarching goal is to achieve social justice, gender equality, and poverty eradication by shifting and redistributing power and resources, strengthening the resilience of communities and movements, and fulfilling the rights of people living in poverty and exclusion.
The four programmatic priorities to deliver that ambition will be
1: Address the structural causes of violence against women and girls and
secure women’s economic justice
2: Ensure increased civic participation and state accountability for the
redistribution of resources and delivery of quality, gender-responsive public
services
3: Strengthen resilient livelihoods and secure climate justice
4: Advance transformative women-led emergency preparedness, response
and prevention- Meetings
