    Goals / Remit

Founded in San Francisco in 2008, Airbnb is an online community marketplace that connects people who have spare space in their homes with guests who are looking for a place to stay.

The website now lists properties in over 34,000 locations in 191 countries worldwide. In 2014, over 50% of Airbnb guests stayed in Europe. Airbnb and its community are leaders in a new global economic trend: the “sharing economy”. This is a new, collaborative model of consumption that harnesses the unique power of the internet to make the sharing of physical products, private property and real-life services easier.

We welcome the discussions that have been taking place in Brussels over the last few months, which have sought to understand the implications of this new economic model for economy and society. We strongly support a greater consumer choice, and promote the role of platforms like ours in creating a safe, high-quality travel experiences.
Europe is a crucial part of our business, and we look forward to continuing to change the way in which Europeans travel by enhancing innovation and competition in the field of tourism.
