    Goals / Remit

    The Balkan Economic Forum was established for the development and implementation of innovative strategies and creative solutions to the current economic challenges facing the countries that share the Balkan Peninsula in order to stimulate regional economic growth which, in turn, strengthens regional cooperation, peace and security.

    The Balkan Economic Forum is independent of any national government, political party or any other vested interest and operates with an inclusive approach that respects universal human rights and recognises the potential of every individual to actively contribute to the achievement of tangible economic development for the social welfare of a region.

    - Starting from October 2018 BEF has a permanent representative in Brussels. Mr Toni Popovski is a member of the Advisory Board of BEF and supports BEF as a project developer. He is husband of Ambassador and Head of the Mission of the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU in Brussels, Mrs. Agneza Rusi.

    - Mr Popovski was the First Minister of Environment and Physical Planning in Macedonia and co-chair (with EC DG Environment) of the Task Force that coordinated the implementation of the Regional Environmental Reconstruction Program for South-East Europe. He also served as Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (2001 - 2003) and Project Manager/Deputy Team Leader of several path breaking projects on decentralization (EAR/CARDS), national water sector reform (MEPP/IPA) and biodiversity protection (UNDP/GEF). He was a member of the International Jury of the European Awards for Environment – Industry (December 2001 - December 2002; the European Environment and Health Committee (June 2001- June 2003); the International Advisory Board of UNEP IETC – International Environment and Technology Centre based in Osaka/Japan (June 2001 - June 2003) and the Environmental Advisory Committee of EBRD, London/UK (June 2001 - May 2005)
    He works as a freelance consultant with 23 years of professional experience and strong expertise in public policy analyses and formulation with a focus on good governance, EU integration and stakeholder’s involvement, sub-national government reform and delivery of public services, decentralization, regional and rural development, environmental protection, and spatial and urban planning.

    - Besides the relevant EU/EC institutions such as the DG Environment, DG Regio and DG NEAR, Mr Popovski scheduled meetings with the UNDP and Regional Cooperation Council officials and representatives in Brussels as well as the organizations and associations of the European sub-national and local authorities.

    - Starting from 01.01.2019, we included four persons in our team:
    a) Ragmi Jusufi, Head of international business development and cooperation
    b) Aleksandar Marjanovik, Head of project development and implementation
    c) Nadica Jovanovska Boshkovska, Head of international education and training
    d) Snezhana Hristova, Strategic Advisor

    - We signed two Memorandums of Cooperation:

    - Sustainable Fisheries Development Socio-Economic Study. This paper was prepared "pro-bono" at the request of a Member of the European Parliament's Fisheries Committee who wished to have Mr. Alexander's proposal for the European Fisheries Reform. His paper was distributed to the President of the European Commission, the European Commissioner for Fisheries, Members of the Fisheries Committee of the European Parliament, European Fisheries Ministers and others including European stakeholders.
