    Goals / Remit

    Our organisation is willing to provide acces to advanced stem cell therapies to as many families as possible, through cord blood and tissue collection at birth delivery. Being part of the largest European group and the 5th in the world, can help families make better decisions when stem cells transplants are the choice in their medical cases and even guide them further to benefit from such transplants based on latest stem cells' therapies.

    Main EU files targeted

    The EU legislation on blood, tissues and cells (namely the Blood Directive (2002/98/EC) and the Tissues and Cells Directive (2004/23/EC)

    • It is of outmost importance to give the future parents the real possibility to store the stem cells collected from the umbilical cord at birth, with the observance of all their rights. Such is not only to the benefit of the parents, child and their families, but also to the benefit of the health system, offering new treatment opportunities and contributing to the development of the public health system, both at the level of each Member State and at European level;
    • In light of the affordable healthcare principle, all patients, irrespective of the Member State of origin, should not be hindered from using needed treatments and procedures because of excessive costs;
    • The fees charged by the maternity hospitals for the collection of blood/tissue should be fair and brought to the attention of the patients in a clear manner;
    • The patients should have the right to be totally informed on the existing available options on stem cells banks in a complete and transparent manner;
    • The choice of the stem cells bank providing the processing and storage services of the collected biological material should be left to the patient, without being influenced by the maternity hospital.
    • Regulating fees for the collection procedures relating to stem cells may also be favorable for the Member States since, on what concerns public stem cells banks, the relevant costs (including collecting) are covered by the public health system;
    • When addressing the matter of stem cells supply, a reality that could not be ignored is the potential of stem cells private banks in increasing stem cells supply at European Union level. Regulating a maximum threshold applied at European Union’s level for the collection of cord blood may significantly enhance the affordability of stem-cells based medical care for European citizens.
