    Goals / Remit

    The producers of bromine worldwide established in 1997
    an international organization, BSEF. Its members are Albemarle Corporation, ICL Industrial Products, Chemtura and Tosoh Corporation. BSEF receives funding from its members each year:

    - To commission science on brominated flame retardant
    (BFRs) and bromine;

    - To inform decision-makers and other stakeholders
    on the results of this science, and to represent
    the bromine industry on issues of environment and
    human health;

    BSEF has contracts with independent scientists
    who evaluate research. Additionally research is
    commissioned from independent scientists and
    scientific institutes.

    Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) save lives
    by preventing and limiting fires. It is important
    that any environmental concerns are addressed,
    so that the life saving benefits of these
    products can be maintained, without damage
    to the environment.
