    Goals / Remit

Carbon Market Watch is an international NGO with unique expertise in carbon pricing. Our strength is the combination of in-depth policy expertise and close work with community groups in countries across the world. Carbon Market Watch’s mission is to ensure that carbon pricing policies drive a just transition towards zero-carbon societies. We promote environmental integrity and human rights and empower communities to participate in decision making processes related to climate policies. We work at the global, European, national as well as local levels in numerous countries. Our key campaign goals are: Ensuring a high enough carbon price that reflects the true cost of pollution on the society. Advocating for ambitious and rapid climate action in the aviation and shipping sectors. Protecting human rights and ensuring robust governance for results-based climate finance through UN mechanisms. Pushing for high environmental integrity of climate mitigation actions and raising Europe’s climate ambition. More information is available at http://carbonmarketwatch.org/about/

    Other activities

Carbon Market Watch is a successor of CDM Watch, which was set up in 2009 as an initiative of several international NGOs to provide an independent perspective on individual Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects and to critically assess the political decision-making process affecting wider carbon market developments.

CDM Watch successfully advocated for stronger civil society participation and major policy changes at the UN and EU level and uncovered unprecedented scandals in the CDM.

Since 2012, Carbon Market Watch continues these activities and has expanded its work to other carbon market initiatives, including the EU’s Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) and the Carbon Offset and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA).

For further information visit our website at www.carbonmarketwatch.org.

    Carbon Market Watch Network:

The Carbon Mareket Watch Network is an initiative started by Carbon Market Watch in 2010. Currently it connects more than 800 NGOs and academics from the Global North and South to share information and concerns about carbon offset projects and policies.

Its purpose is to strengthen the voice of civil society in carbon market developments and wider environmental policy-making.

The Network enables people and groups to keep informed about carbon market developments, share concerns with peers and seek support and advice for advocacy efforts at the international policy level.

Through our Capacity Building initiative we have provided our Network a much broader understanding of the obstacles that inhibit people, governments, international organisations and non-governmental organisations from realizing their developmental goals while enhancing the abilities that will allow them to achieve measurable and sustainable results.
