Goals / Remit
CODA Oslo International Dance Festival was founded in 2001. Now, almost 20 years later, dance as an art form stands stronger than ever in Norway. The festival has been pivotal in this development. CODA is the largest contemporary dance festival in the Nordics and collaborates with all the major dance venues across Oslo and Bærum; Dansens hus, The Norwegian Opera and Ballet, Bærum Kulturhus, Black Box teater and Riksscenen. The festival also presents dance in new and unusual venues and in the public space. In odd numbered years it is a big performance festival and in the even numbered years the focus is on learning and engagement projects. The Festival has initiated several Norwegian, Nordic and European collaborations such as CODA+, KreativLab and Diverse Nordic Voices Choreographic Initiativ.

Our institution is a member of "Big Pulse Dance Alliance," a large scale cooperation project which receives funding from Creative Europe (Reference Number 616729-CREA-1-2020-1-DE-CULT-COOP2). The project partners have also taken part in a meeting with commissioner Mariya Gabriel to discuss the future of dance festivals as an integral part of the European cultural landscape today. Especially, how to continue to develop new ways of encouraging and supporting collaboration and exchange between festivals. The present situation calls for democratic measures to secure the contingency and sustainability of the sector in the future. We would like to have an open dialogue based on our network’s experience to contribute to the success of future of the European cultural initiatives.
