    Goals / Remit

    Compassion in World Farming Brussels (CIWF Brussels) is the EU office of Compassion in World Farming International, an organization that works to end all factory farming practices, promote sustainable food systems and reduction in production and consumption of animal products. Through its advocacy work, the organization seeks to achieve significant improvements in farm animal welfare by strengthening legislation and enforcement, with a particular focus on Europe.
    Over the years, the work of the organization has contributed to the EU recognition of animals as sentient beings, along with key legislation regarding the banning of cruel factory farming practices, such as the barren battery cages for egg-laying hens, veal crates and sow stalls in the EU, as well as Directives and Regulations on farm animal welfare.

    We follow closely the work of the Intergroup on the Welfare and Conservation of Animals

    Communication activities

    We hold events and exhibitions and are involved in many communication activities throughout the year. We also attend many meetings and events organized by various stakeholders. We publish briefings and papers on areas related to our work.

    Other activities

    We have lobbied the Parliament to:
    Move away from the use of cages in all animal farming
    change the CAP to help EU agriculture move away from industrial animal production to sustainable, humane forms of animal husbandry
    press for improved enforcement of EU legislation concerning the protection of farm animals
    require animal products to be labelled as to method of production, as eggs are
    continue to improve animal welfare legislation by introducing species specific directives on dairy cows, rabbits, fish and other animals from whom there is no specific legislation
    ban live animal exports to non EU countries where they do not have protection of EU rules and enforce Reg 1/2005 on transport of animals within the EU
    Significantly reduce the production and consumption of animal products and promote policies help the shift towards more plant based foods
    prohibit the sale of food from cloned animals and their descendants
    ban foie gras production
