    Goals / Remit

SURF's is a not-for-profit organization, owned by its members (among others: universities, universities of applied sciences, teaching hospitals research organisations). It's mission is to enhance the quality of Dutch education and research through innovations in ICT. SURF makes its innovations available on favourable terms and ensures that optimum use can be made of the possibilities offered by ICT. SURF develops, innovates and operates an advanced, federated e-infrastructure in conjunction with the institutions. SURF also organizes demand aggregation, collaboration and knowledge sharing in relation to ICT themes for the member institutions. The innovations of SURF have an impact on society that extends further than the institutions themselves.

    Main EU files targeted

SURF is active in a number of pan-European organizations. The European NRENs (National Research & Education Networks) are federated in GÉANT. A large number of European high-performance computing centers are federated in PRACE (Partnership for Advanced Computing in Europe). In addition, SURF participates on behalf of SURF in a number of other pan-European organizations, notably EGI (European Grid Initiative) and EUDAT (European Data Infrastructure). All these pan-European organizations work actively with the European Commission on the preparation of (parts of the) research and innovation work programs within Horizon 2020. They also participate in public consultations, such as 'cloud computing', 'midterm review H2020' or 'digital platforms'. SURF represents the Dutch government in EOSC and in the e-IRG. Finally, SURF follows closely the development of policies related to cyber security and privacy, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
