    Goals / Remit

Drax Power Limited is the operating subsidiary of Drax Group plc and the owner and operator of Drax Power Station, the largest, cleanest and most efficient coal-fired power station in the UK. The company is currently executing plans to transform the business into a predominantly biomass-fuelled generator.

The output capacity of our six generators is 4,000 megawatts, making it nearly twice the size of the next largest coal-fired power station in the UK. We sell the large majority of our power through the wholesale market, with the remainder sold through our supply company, Haven Power Limited. We currently provide enough power to meet some 7% of the UK’s electricity needs.

As well as being an important strategic asset nationally, Drax is also vital to the North Yorkshire economy. Drax employs some 800 people and supports many other local jobs indirectly.

Against this contribution we make every effort to balance our commitment to the country’s energy needs with minimising environmental impacts on land, air and water. Our generating units are fitted with flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) equipment removing at least 90% of the sulphur dioxide (SO2) from emissions, and through retrofitting boosted over fire air (BOFA) technology on all our boilers we are reducing still further emissions of oxides of nitrogen (NOX). At the same time, by-products of the coal combustion and FGD processes are recycled through their further use in the construction industry.

We are committed to reducing our emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2). Through converting three of our six generatng units to burn sustainable biomass in place of coal, we will halve our carbon footprint, relative to today, within five years. In 2012, we completed a five year project - the largest steam turbine modernisation programme in UK history - upgrading our high pressure and low pressure turbines which will save one million tonnes of CO2 a year.

In March 2009, Drax acquired Ipswich based Haven Power Limited, an electricity supply company established specifically to serve the energy needs of business customers.
