    Goals / Remit

The ETC are a global coalition of leaders from across the energy landscape committed to achieving net-zero emissions by mid-century, in line with the Paris climate objective of limiting global warming to well below 2°C and ideally to 1.5°C. Analysis from the Energy Transitions Commission (ETC) has demonstrated that achieving net-zero by mid-century is technically and economically possible. However, winning the climate race requires immediate, decisive, collective action from policymakers, industry players, financial institutions and civil society organisations. Our ambition is to inform the decisions of public and private decision makers and support the leaders at the forefront of climate action to speed up the deployment of low and zero-carbon solutions. We do that by providing them with datapoints and tools on the energy transition as well as convening action-oriented, high-level discussions and nurturing collaborations between leaders from a range of sectors.

    Main EU files targeted

The ETC’s activities are focused on informing the public debate at a regional level within the EU. The ETC's engagement over the last years in Europe has demonstrated the power of bringing the ETC vision and approach to the regional context. Our engagement has involved (i) adapting our influencing approach to the EU context, (ii) working with local partners who already have local knowledge and access,(iii)strengthening our membership in Europe to enhance the ETC’s legitimacy and voice, and (iv)deepening our understanding of local policymaking to be able to effectively influence policy developments.
In 2020, the ETC worked to inform and engage the EU Commission, Parliament and Council as they defined their agenda for the next 5 years on the European Green New Deal. 2020 also involved extensive engagement on the EU green recovery following the COVID-19 crisis. Specifically on industry engagement, the ETC has aimed to accelerate the transition to net-zero across multiple harder-to-abate sectors of the economy, by inspiring, informing or seeding new industry initiatives, involving businesses and finance players. We are doing this through our partnership with the World Economic Forum – the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) – which was relaunched in 2021. The MPP provides an umbrella to seven sectoral initiatives, each one bringing together a leading group of corporate leaders from the respective value chains committed to accelerate progress towards net-zero emissions. The ETC is currently also leading work related to the Steel, Aviation and Shipping initiatives. These initiatives are global in scope but are active at the regional policy level, particularly in the context of the European Green Deal. In 2022, the ETC provided insights to key leaders of the EC to inform the response to the energy security crisis. The analysis which informed these discussions can be found in the Building Energy Security report.

    Communication activities

Significant EU related activities have included the publication of a set of COVID-19 recommendations for a green recovery in the EU. This was coupled with a European recovery public workshop attended by European-based industry leaders and policymakers.
Over the last year, the ETC has worked with key interlocutors from EU institutions, as well as policymakers from EU member states. These discussions have increasingly focused on specific implementation issues on the decarbonisation of the power system, the hydrogen scale-up, the management of the bioresource, and the decarbonisation of harder-to-abate sectors.
Going forward EU activities will include:
    • Bolstering support for the Green Deal and raising the ambition of policymakers by working with those within the EU Commission, Parliament, Council and key member states who want to understand the need for further action,
    • Influencing relevant policy design of upcoming energy policy priorities, where additional exchanges with a diverse and ambitious industry group would help build support for critical policies,
    • Continuing engagement on sector specific regulations via support of the Mission Possible Partnership.
