    Other financial info

In 2020, EJF received funding from three EU grants--two directly awarded to EJF and one through WWF Austria. The two directly awarded grants were in Ghana and Liberia.

The project in Ghana, Far Dwuma Nkɔdo (contract FOOD/2016/380-426), began in 2017 and set out to secure sustainable fisheries in the country. EJF worked with the Ghanaian group Hen Mpoano to drive a reduction in illegal fishing, and give local fishers a voice in processes to build a more sustainable sector. Activities included using a combination of local surveillance and remote monitoring to strengthen the reporting of illegal fishing; empowering small-scale fishers, vulnerable and marginalised groups to articulate their interest in fisheries reforms and implement fisheries co-management; and promoting alternative livelihood options for small-scale fishing communities. It concluded at the end of 2020.

In Liberia, EJF has worked since 2019 on a four-year project, Communities for Fisheries (contract FED/2019/411-342). EJF’s local and international teams empower communities to co-manage fisheries and reduce illegal fishing, building lasting sustainability and social equity. The project is part of the EU-Liberia Agricultural partnership programme which aims, among other things, at supporting a competitive and environmentally sustainable value chain for inland and coastal fisheries in Liberia. EJF's project provides training, workshops and community engagement, building capacity for fisheries ‘co-management’. In particular, the project engages and empowers women, who make up 60% of the fisheries workforce.

From 2018-21, EJF received EU funding via WWF Austria as part of the Fish Forward 2 project. It raised awareness of the need for sustainable seafood consumption. It sought behaviour change in consumers and corporates in Europe based on an increased awareness and knowledge of the implications of seafood consumption and sourcing on people and oceans, particularly in developing countries.

    Communication activities

    - EJF is in routine and regular contact with MEPs to present evidence from our investigations and grassroots partnerships in order to raise awareness on problems in the fisheries sector, particularly regarding the issue of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing in West Africa and South-East Asia.

    - EJF is member of a coalition of NGOs (the EU IUU Coalition) working to support the effective implementation of the EU IUU Regulation and maintain EU leadership in global fisheries governance. EJF is also working on the revision of the Control Regulation (1224/2009) alongside other NGOs and as part of the EU Fisheries Control coalition. As part of this coalition work, we maintain a close contact with relevant MEPs and organise events in the European Parliament to share our recommendations.

    - EJF is working with a coalition of other NGOs to raise awareness about sustainable fish consumption in the EU, as well as communicate the pressure on fishing stocks from overfishing, illegal fishing, etc. as well as the fact that climate change compounds these problems.

    - EJF is working with the European Commission to share evidence of IUU fishing in high risk areas such as West Africa and South-East Asia to inform and support the effective implementation of the EU IUU Regulation 'carding scheme'.

    - EJF is in contact with the European Commission and MEPs to raise awareness of the need for protection of climate refugees.

    - EJF ensures visibility to the EU Commission's financial support to our projects in Ghana and Liberia, including through published materials and events.
