    Goals / Remit

European Schoolnet is the network of 31 European Ministries of Education, based in Brussels. As a not-for-profit organisation, we aim to bring innovation in teaching and learning to our key stakeholders: Ministries of Education, schools, teachers, researchers, and industry partners.

Since its founding in 1997, European Schoolnet has used its links with education ministries to help schools make effective use of educational technologies, equipping both teachers and pupils with the skills to achieve in the knowledge society.

European Schoolnet provides both Ministries and schools with: information and services relating to the innovative use of educational technology; outreach campaigns on specific educational topics such as maths, science and technology; and research activities.

    In particular, we pledge to:

    - Support schools in achieving effective use of ICT in teaching and learning
    - Improve and raise the quality of education in Europe
    - Promote the European dimension in education

Thousands of schools are engaged in our various pilot projects and studies, testing new learning activities and technologies in the classroom, and exploring the use of new pedagogical tools in teaching STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths). We identify and develop learning resources in various languages that teachers across Europe can use in their teaching, provide peer-to-peer online communities where teachers can exchange ideas and share resources, as well as offering various training opportunities online and offline.

To fulfill our goals, we develop European-funded projects with the European Commission, the Ministries of Education and industry partners. These projects have included iTEC (Designing the Future Classroom) and ECB - Ingenious (attracting pupils towards science, technology, engineering and maths). We also run a number of services for teachers and policymakers, such as Scientix, to promote science education and Better Internet for Kids, dedicated to digital citizenship skills and online safety.

European Schoolnet has worked particularly towards enhancing cooperation across Europe between schools as the coordinator of the eTwinning Central Support Service since 2004. We also have a long experience in contributing to awareness-raising campaigns across Europe on the importance of gaining e-Skills (e-Skills Week), and transforming STEM education to increase the appeal of those sectors among pupils (ECB-Ingenious project, STEM Alliance).

To further our goal of supporting teachers to introduce innovation into their teaching, European Schoolnet created the Future Classroom Lab in Brussels in 2012. A unique hub for showcasing technological and pedagogical innovation, the Future Classroom Lab is supported by sponsors such as Microsoft, Samsung, Acer, Cisco, Lego and many others. Other projects dedicated to teachers’ professional development are being run on a continual basis, using the Future Classroom Lab to identify, analyse, and mainstream the best innovative practices in education, and equipping teachers with the necessary skills to develop their teaching practice.

With the help of our research team, European Schoolnet also monitors trends in education through its Observatory. We provide country reports on innovation and technology in education, as well as European research, such as the 2013 use of technology in schools report commissioned by the European Commission.

European Network of Living Labs (ENoLL): EUN is an adherent member of the network through its initiative Future Classroom Lab. The Future Classroom Lab in Brussels is a fully equipped, reconfigurable, teaching and learning space developed by European Schoolnet, its 30 supporting Ministries of Education and leading educational technology providers.
It has been designed as a “Living Lab’ for how ICT can be implemented in schools and where policy makers, ICT suppliers, teachers and educational researchers can come together to rethink how new technologies can support the educational reform process at both national and European level.

Through the activities of Insafe, European Schoolnet participates in:
    • Internet Governance Forum, launched in November 2012 to support the United Nations Secretary-General in convening a new forum for multi-stakeholder dialogue on Internet governance and security
    • Safer Internet Forum, the main European Conference on online safety since 2004, bringing together industry representatives, law enforcement authorities, child welfare organizations, researchers, policy makers, and parents' and teachers' representatives.

Several activities of European Schoolnet (EUN Partnership) over last year contributed to the Digital Agenda (DA) strategy, by fostering new skills, ICT inclusion and the role of science in society.
In support of Pillar VI (Enhancing digital literacy, skills and inclusion), European Schoolnet has carried out the “Survey of Schools: ICT in Education”, funded by the European Commission DG Communications Networks, Content and Technology (DG Connect) and published in the European Commission's 2012 Digital Scoreboard. The survey is one of a series within the EU's cross-sector benchmarking activities comparing national progress to i2010 and EU2020 goals, and it is the first Europe-wide survey of schools' ICT for six years, following Europe 2002 and EU2005 surveys.
European Schoolnet has further coordinated the European e-Skills Week 2012 and 2014 campaigns, an initiative promoted by the DG Enterprise & Industry under the e-Skills for the 21st Century strategy (Pillar VI, Action 58: Develop a framework to recognise ICT skills). Coordinated in collaboration with DIGITALEUROPE (ICT industry association) and with the support of a network of national support services (industry and education stakeholders), the campaign aimed to highlight the demand for skilled ICT users and professionals, and to inform students, young professionals and SMEs about the opportunities that ICT-related jobs present.
European Schoolnet is further contributing to the DA initiative Better Internet for Kids by coordinating Insafe, a EU network of Awareness Centres, co-funded by DG Connect under the Safer Internet Programme (2009-2013), with the objective of promoting safe, responsible use of the Internet and mobile devices to young people. During the Safer Internet Day 2012 organised by Insafe, EUN has launched the ‘eSafety Label’, a Europe-wide accreditation and support service for schools, set up to develop and maintain high standards of eSafety.
During autumn 2012 European Schoolnet has participated in the consultation on "Opening up Education – a proposal for a European Initiative to enhance education and skills development through new technologies", launched by the DG Education and Culture.
Regular contacts with the Commission are pursued under major EU funded projects and services coordinated by EUN, among which:
    • Scientix: community for science education in Europe, which collects teaching and research materials from projects financed by the EU 6th and 7th Framework Programmes (FPs), to facilitate dissemination and sharing of know-how and best practices in science education.
    • ECB - European Coordinating Body for STEM Education (7th FP): multi-stakeholders partnership of STEM education stakeholders, launched by European Schoolnet in 2011 in collaboration with the European Roundtable of Industrialists, which has lead this year to the creation of the STEM Alliance.
    • ITEC - Innovative Technologies for Engaging Classrooms (7th FP): has involved education ministries, technology providers and research organisations since 2010 to bring about transformation in learning and teaching through the strategic application of learning technology.
    • eTwinning (DG Education, Comenius/Erasmus+): Central Support Service to promote school collaboration and networking in Europe through the use of ICT.
    • INSAFE: European network of Awareness Centres promoting safe, responsible use of the Internet and mobile devices to young people, co-funded by the Safe Internet programme (now under the umbrella of the Better Internet for Kids).
Within Scientix and ECB, European Schoolnet has collaborated with the campaign Science it’s a girl thing, promoted by the DG Research.
In addition, European Schoolnet is part of the Grand Coalition for Jobs launched by VP Kroes and collaborate closely with DG CONNECT and stakeholders to achieve the goals of the coalition, especially in promoting coding and ICT skills.
