Goals / Remit
EURASHE is the European association of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that offer professionally oriented programmes and are engaged in applied and profession-related research within the Bologna cycles. Currently, about 1 100 higher education institutions in 40 countries within and outside the European Higher Education Area (EHEA) are affiliated to EURASHE. The Association is present mostly through National Associations of Higher Education Institutions and individual institutions, such as Universities, (University) Colleges and Universities of Applied Sciences, as well as through other professional associations and stakeholder organisations active in the field of higher education.
EURASHE members operate within and across different national systems whether these are unitary or binary, professional and/or academic.
EURASHE’s mission is to represent the views of professionally oriented institutions and programmes in the Higher Education systems in countries of EHEA, either in binary HE systems (professional or vocational higher education) or in unitary ‘university’ systems.
Its aim is to promote the interests of professional higher education in the EHEA and to contribute to the progressive development of the European Higher Education and Research Area (EHERA). In addition to offering professionally oriented programmes, EURASHE members are specifically engaged in applied and profession-related research, and its technological applications.
EURASHE was founded in Patras, Greece, in 1990. It has the status of a non-profit international association according to Belgian law and its Secretariat is located in Brussels.
EURASHE believes partnership and cooperation with other regions of the world are important. It has thus established relationships with countries outside the EHEA through associate membership and partnership agreements with other regions, such as Canada, the United States of America, Central America, Central Asia and the Caribbean region.
EURASHE focuses primarily on policy development and on Higher Education projects and research with emphasis on its professionally oriented segments. Furthermore, it organises Annual Conferences, Thematic seminars and tailor-made events for its members.Main EU files targeted

EURASHE is engaged in the development of policies on key issues for Professional Higher Education (PHE). They are regrouped into 4 areas. Click on one of the links underneath to access our various hubs. It includes a summary of our activities on the topic, as well as links to our documentation and resources, as well as events in the area in question.
The employability of graduates has from the outset of the Bologna Reform process been considered as acornerstone in developing the three-cycle structure of Higher Education, and the curricula are being adapted accordingly. The underlying concern is to make higher education more responsive to rapidly developing societies, with equally rapidly changing demands from the world of employment.
Lifelong learning (LLL) as a leading principle for the creation and development of the EHEA is strongly supported and advocated by EURASHE and its members, and we believe that the predominant qualities of LLL are widely found in PHE institutions and programs. For societies, LLL contributes to extending knowledge and skills and to creating new skills and transversal competences. For individuals, LLL is a major source to be flexible towards societal and professional changes or to pursue personal desires for the mere reasons of personal development and growth.
International openness in HE is first of all a means to stimulate global awareness and a true sense of global citizenship and global responsibility among graduates and within the HE sector as a whole. Present-day problems are worldwide and cannot be solved in a definite geographical area like the EHEA, but require a global platform for global solutions. Moreover, the creation of the knowledge society requires global awareness and responsibility, and HEIs can play an important role here in consciousness raising and in finding solutions through internationalisation of programmes and study environment.
Mobility of students and staff remains an important goal of the Bologna Process. Mobility is important for sharing and dissemination of knowledge and skills among students and professionals; it contributes to the personal development and responsible citizenship of the individual; and it underpins the European identity and the multilingual tradition in a global context.
Education, research and innovation are elements in all types and levels of HE, but different HEIs focus on different aspects of education according to their mission statements. We do see, however, a continuum between academic, professional and vocational teaching and training; and similarly we see a continuum between fundamental research, innovation and applied research.
Multidimensional transparency tools. Various ministerial communiqués have highlighted the diversity of European HE as an asset. A transparent, multidimensional classification system of instruments which are designed to benchmark HEIs on research and innovation, teaching and learning outcomes, services to society, level of internationalisation and mobility, governance, study fees and study environment, student and stakeholder involvement, etc., may help identify and make visible such diversity.- Meetings
