Goals / Remit
EURASHE is the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education that offer professionally orientated programmes and are engaged in applied research within the Bologna cycles. EURASHE represents universities of applied sciences and university colleges; other members of EURASHE are national and sectorial associations of higher education institutions, and other individual institutions, such as universities.
According to our statutes, the mission of EURASHE is to promote, within the European Higher Education Area (EHEA), the interests of professional higher education and of relevant higher education institutions that are recognised or financed by the public authorities of a EHEA member country.
The aims of EURASHE are:
(a) to contribute to the creation of a European Higher Education Area (EHEA) and European Research Area (ERA) by influencing policy-making at European level on issues pertaining to professional higher education;
(b) to represent the members’ common interests at European level, as well as outside the EHEA;
(c) to promote professional higher education in the EHEA and ERA;
(d) to provide members with a platform for communication, information and exchange of views, with a focus on issues relevant to the future development of higher education;
(e) to ensure and safeguard the cooperation between the members of the Association;
(f) to achieve cooperation in the field of higher education by establishing close links with other organisations that have similar objectives.
To achieve its aims, EURASHE deploys activities such as:
(a) membership representation, notably towards European institutions, authorities and stakeholders;
(b) production of policy papers, analytical studies and other documents;
(c) organisation of networking activities, learning events, conferences and seminars for the members and partners;
(d) dissemination of information;
(e) partnership with stakeholder organisations in higher education;

EURASHE is engaged in the development of policies on key issues for Professional Higher Education (PHE). They are regrouped into 4 areas which are firstly Mission of PHE, secondly Quality of HE, thirdly Modernising PHE within a diversified HE, and finally Research, Development and Innovation.
PHE may play an important role as an intermediary between higher education, vocational education and training and the labour market. In particular, PHE institutions are – in a way – ‘bilingual’; they speak both the academic and professional language, and can thus be key players in the process of a better understanding between higher education and the world of work. To attain this aim, it is important to elaborate multidimensional characteristics of PHE with adequate indicators of good practice or even excellence, and to make a comparative review of existing higher education structures in European countries, identifying also problems and weak points of present systems.
Various ministerial communiqués have highlighted the diversity of European higher education as an asset. A transparent, multidimensional classification system of instruments which are designed to benchmark higher education institutions on research and innovation, teaching and learning outcomes, services to society, level of internationalisation and mobility, governance, study fees and study environment, student and stakeholder involvement, etc., may help identify and make visible such diversity.
Lifelong learning (LLL) as a leading principle for the development of the EHEA is strongly supported and advocated by EURASHE. LLL contributes to extending knowledge and skills and to creating new skills and transversal competences. For individuals, LLL is a major source to be flexible towards professional changes or personal development and growth. We urge governments to ensure adequate investment and legal support for LLL as one of the most liberating tools of equitable society as one of the strongest movers towards economic growth.
Applied research, development and innovation (RDI) conducted in Universities of Applied Sciences (UAS) play an important role in enhancing European competitiveness and innovation capacity, especially on the regional level where institutions act as connectors and crucial links between world of work, organisations and society. In addition, applied research activities play an important role in developing students’ entrepreneurship skills and contribute to more economic growth and jobs. The working life skills gained from practical research also strongly enhance graduates’ employability.
