Goals / Remit
The European Citizen Action Service (ECAS) is an international non-profit organization, based in Brussels with a pan-European membership and 24 years of experience. ECAS’ objectives as defined in its statutes are to: strengthen the European strategy of NGOs in member and applicant countries of the European Union (EU), defend peoples’ free movement rights and promote a more inclusive European citizenship, campaign for transparency and institutional reforms to bring the EU closer to the citizen.
ECAS provides services to a network of about 100 NGOs in Europe. It has a successful track record in providing advice and technical assistance to both CSOs and citizens on EU citizens’ rights enforcement and civic participation in the EU decision-making process (e.g. Your Europe Advice, EU Rights Clinic, ECI Support Centre, study visits, funding alerts).
Consistent with its mission as defined in its statutes, ECAS’ activities in the last 24 years have been focused at fostering European citizenship and at improving conditions for civic and democratic participation at the EU level.
Through Your Europe Advice, high quality advice is provided to EU citizens in order to help them exercise their right of free movement. This right is the one most highly valued by EU citizens, and ECAS’ service has successfully met the challenge of a continuously increasing number of questions in recent years.
The EU Rights Clinic was launched in January 2013 as a not-for-profit service whose mission is to problem-solve difficult cases involving EU citizens and third country nationals through collective action and advocacy for the implementation of measures at both the EU level and in member states, in order to overcome visible and hidden barriers to European citizenship.
The ECI Support Centre was made operational in June 2013 by a consortium of NGOs with different specializations in order to encourage democratic and civic participation of citizens at the Union level. ECAS coordinates the advice provided by them based on their expertise, which includes providing both specialized support to ECI organizers before and during the ECI process and policy analysis of the implementation of the ECI regulation at national and European levels.
Through its funding alerts, monthly updates on EU news, consultations and events, and calls for proposals and tenders, ECAS enables the 100 members of its network to remain aware of EU developments.Main EU files targeted
