European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ)
EU Transparency Register
48872621093-60 First registered on 06 Feb 2009
Goals / Remit
The European Coalition for Corporate Justice (ECCJ) is a coalition of NGOs, trade unions and other civil society groups campaigning for greater corporate social responsibility and corporate accountability. Our members are mainly national platforms from European countries, with individual organisations participating if no platform yet exists in their country. A full list of members is available on our website http://www.corporatejustice.org/-mitglieder-.html?lang=en. Altogether we represent over 250 NGOs, trade unions and CSOs across Europe.
ECCJ has three concrete objectives:
1. To increase European co-operation amongst NGOs working on Corporate Accountability and to influence policies within the EU and its member states.
2. To raise public awareness about Corporate Justice and policies of the EU and to promote a consistent viewpoint from civil society.
3. To build capacity and knowledge among NGOs in Europe with regard to corporate justice and accountability policies.
In addition to this the coalition calls for better EU regulation to ensure that European companies consider their social and environmental impacts and mitigate them where they are negative. In order to achieve this, we advocate the extension of parent company liability, the establishment of a duty of care for companies over their sphere of influence and greater transparency through mandatory social and environmental reporting and clarification of corporate lobbying activities.
In relation to this last aim, we consider this register to be insufficient. The ECCJ believes that this register fails basic transparency standards and that it does not provide EU lobbying transparency. When registering, we have therefore chosen to give all relevant information that we consider necessary for lobbying transparency. A credible EU lobbying transparency register should include names of individual lobbyists and the issues that they try to influence, provide precise and comparable financial information on lobbying, and have effective sanctions to ensure the accuracy and completeness of the information disclosed. In an effort to arrive at a more objective way of calculating lobbying expenditures, we follow guidelines that result from consultations with public interest organisations, professionals working on lobby transparency as well as experts of US lobby disclosure legislation. Our registration is therefore providing a more comprehensive calculation of our expenses for activities that aim to influence the policy formulation and decision-making processes of the European institutions, and a list of those who, on behalf of the European Coalition for Corporate Justice, carry out such activities. Our registration is based on the guidelines for transparent registration developed by the Civil Society Contact Group and ALTER-EU. Other financial info
ECCJ's own budget in 2012 was of approx. €175,723.
About €66,730 was allocated for lobby related activities.
ECCJ relies on voluntary contributions by the members of the Steering Committee and other members of the coalition. Our members contribute in-kind (staff time) and share the costs for specific activities (rent of venues, cost of adverts and publications). Friends of the Earth Europe notably is hosting ECCJ secretariat and its staff and Environmental Law Service has been particularly active in providing legal expertise.
Further information on ECCJ staff and activity expenditures can be found on Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) and Environmental Law Service's (ELS) register profiles.
