    Goals / Remit

The European Council on Refugees & Exiles (ECRE) is a pan-European network of 69 refugee-assisting non-governmental organisations. ECRE is concerned with the needs of all individuals who seek refuge and protection within Europe.

ECRE aims to promote the protection and integration of refugees in Europe, based on the values of human dignity, human rights, and an ethic of solidarity.

ECRE seeks to achieve this aim by:

1.Advocating a humane and generous European asylum policy and by promoting the development of a comprehensive and coherent response by the international community to refugee movements.

2.Strengthening networking between refugee-assisting non-governmental organisations in Europe.

3.Developing the institutional capacity of refugee-assisting non-governmental organisations in Europe.

ECRE draws on the energy, ideas and commitment of an active membership of refugee-assisting non-governmental organisations and a strong secretariat. It also strives to involve wider civil society, the political community and refugee communities in its work.

It aims to ensure that its ideas and positions are of high quality, legally accurate and representative of a wide range of knowledge, experience and best practice throughout Europe.

Its working methods are guided by democratic values and the principle of seeking to mobilise the widest possible active involvement of its member agencies through working groups, advisory groups, annual general meeting and Europe-wide networks. It encourages, wherever appropriate, its member agencies to take the lead on a particular project.

Our policy and research aim to demonstrate that the needs of refugees and the interests of European host States are not mutually exclusive but can be realised simultaneously.

Our advocacy focuses on the EU and national level. ECRE follows the policy processes and engage the relevant stakeholders in the creation and revision of asylum and refugee legislation.

ECRE also has a strong focus on Eastern Europe, a significant external border for the EU. ECRE and its members in the region work with borders officials, national authorities, the courts, legal professions and other partners to support refugees.

ECRE works with media officers across Europe in order to achieve a european coordinated approach to media work on asylum issues.

ECRE animates the European Legal Network on Asylum (ELENA). ECRE facilates the organisation of ELENA regular training courses on topics of international and European refugee and asylum law. ELENA brings together 26 national coordinators and 2 000 lawyers from across Europe. ELENA is a forum for legal practitioners who aim to promote the highest human rights standards for the treatment of persons in need of international protection. ELENA also contributes to ECRE advocacy work.

The list below only covers meetings held since November 2014 with commissioners, their cabinet members or directors-general at the European Commission; other lobby meetings with lower-level staff may have taken place, but the European Commission doesn't proactively publish information about these meetings. For more information about which commissioner is responsible for which portfolio, check out this link: https://commissioners.ec.europa.eu/index_en All information below comes from European Commission web pages.

1 July 2024: We have noted that some meetings are appearing in duplicate, ie. some meetings seem to be listed twice. This seems to be because the Commission changes some element of a meeting data after the meeting has first been listed, which causes LobbyFacts to register it as a new meeting. We are investigating further.
