    Goals / Remit

    The European Flame Retardants Association (EFRA) brings together the leading organisations which manufacture, market or use flame retardants in Europe. EFRA covers all types of flame retardants: chemicals based on bromine, chlorine, phosphorus, nitrogen and inorganic compounds.

    EFRA is a sector group of Cefic, the European Chemical Industry Council.
    Its membership offers an all-encompassing industry perspective involving the entire value chain and aims at keeping the highest possible fire safety standards.

    EFRA is a solutions-driven, flexible organization. It seeks to enhance fire safety and flame retardants understanding, by providing expertise exchange, and coordinating studies and research activities.

    EFRA supports all flame retardant technologies: chemicals based on bromine, phosphorus, nitrogen and inorganic compounds

    EFRA addresses common regulatory and scientific challenges related to flame retardant substances and fire safety.

    EFRA seeks to align itself with the industry it serves, and is organized around four Applications Forums:
    - Upholstered Furniture & Textiles
    - Electrical & Electronic Equipments
    - Construction
    - Transportation

    Excellence in product stewardship being at the core of our activities, EFRA has a Product Stewardship Team (PST), leading environmental initiatives such as VECAP®, and activities about the End-of-Life phase of products containing flame retardants. These are complemented with ad-hoc working groups, addressing related regulatory or substance-specific issues as they arise. EFRA is the partner of choicefor all reach related efforts.

    Flame retardants have become an essential component of the fire safety toolbox. A variety of solutions is required to address the specifc challenges of each application. The application forums focus on:
    - developing strong, applications-specific networks (establishing relationships with stakeholders in the value chain, including trade associations);
    - fostering the dialogue with decision-makers at EU, member states and international levels;
    - developing specific pro-active advocacy programmes, based on and supported by science ;
    - improving understanding of fire safety and flame retardants in the specific applications ;
    - developing adequate datasets and information relevant to specific flame retardants applications.
