    Goals / Remit

ELPA’s aim is to promote the interests of people with liver disease and in particular: to highlight the size of the problem; to promote awareness and prevention; to address the low profile of liver disease as compared to other areas of medicine such as heart disease; to share experience of successful initiatives; to work with professional bodies such as EASL and with the EU to ensure that treatment and care are harmonised across Europe to the highest standards. Our Mandate:ELPA emerged from a desire amongst European liver patient groups to share their experiences of the often very different approaches adopted in different countries. In June 2004, 13 patient groups from 10 European and Mediterranean Basin countries met to create the association. ELPA was formally launched in Paris on April 14th 2005 during the annual conference of the European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) and now has 28 members from 23 countries. Our ultimate goal is a world without liver diseases.

    Main EU files targeted

ELPA is covering and advocating for patients suffering from all liver diseases, with a specific focus on hepatitis, Non-Alcoholic Steatosis Hepatitis (NASH), liver cancer, hepatic encephalopathy (HE), and rare liver diseases. We have also participated in Europe's Beating Cancer plan: Launch of an EU-wide debate in February and submitted our proposal for EndHep Initiative as an additional part of the plan which we discussed with DG Sante, Mrs. Butcher prior to the meeting itself. We are a part of ACHIEVE Coalition – Associations collaborating on hepatitis to immunize and eliminate the viruses in Europe and we collaborate closely with Viral Hepatitis Alliance, European Center for Diseases Control (ECDC) and WHO Europe. Additionally, we are closely watching the renewal of the alcohol strategy, chronic diseases, viral hepatitis, an action plan for the health sector response to viral hepatitis in the WHO European Region, EP Resolution on HIV/ Aids, Tuberculosis and Hepatitis C. We are constantly collaborating with »Friends of Liver » MEP group and have just started collaborating with European Kidney Patients' Federation who are collaboratimg with MEP group »Kidney Health«.
