    Goals / Remit

    The European Medical Students Association (EMSA) is an enthusiastic volunteer-based organization advocating and representing the voice of medical students of geographical Europe. EMSA was founded in 1990 in Brussels, by medical students for medical students.

    EMSA’s network and platform encourages medical students from various countries in geographical Europe to actively engage in matters relating to personal development, healthcare and general societal well being.

    Our goal is to implement solutions that highly value personal input, local autonomy and regional characteristics, but also facilitate international cooperation, multidisciplinary dialogue and cultural understanding.

    Standing united in the Spirit of EMSA we also aspire to:
    -Form a network between European medical students to facilitate European integration and develop a sense of European identity;
    -To act as a forum for medical students in Europe, to discuss topics related to the fields of medical education, medical ethics, and medical research and public health;
    -To represent the opinions of the medical students of Europe;
    -To promote the highest standards in European medical education and ensure the quality of healthcare in Europe;
    -To promote training, activities and projects related to health in Europe to the benefit of medical students and society;
    -To facilitate intercultural understanding by organizing social and cultural events;
    -To cooperate with other student organizations and with organizations representing the medical profession.
    -Form a network between European medical students to facilitate European integration and develop a sense of European identity.

    Other financial info

    Before 2017, EMSA recognized a financial year as 2016-2017 which covers one term duration for positions in the EMSA; however, this created some problems in the calculation of EMSA's budget. Therefore, EMSA General Assembly decided to change EMSA Financial year from academic year (20XX-20XX) to a calendar year. Before this change, our financial years covered the second half of the last year and first half of the following year. Also, the membership fee is begun to collect at the beginning of the year in 2018 rather than at the beginning of academic year, however, 2017's membership fees were collected at 2016 Autumn because the financial year was accepted as 2016-2017 before the decision. Thus, we seem like a negative budget in 2017 in the book, but actually, we have already collected the 2017's membership fees before the new beginning of the financial year. Therefore, the negative budget is due to the change in the acceptance of the new financial year duration, not because of overspending or lack of income.
