    Goals / Remit

    The purpose of the Association is:
    • to increase awareness and understanding of the socio-economic importance of European travel and tourism;
    • to contribute to the sustainable development, training, research, and promotion of tourism in Europe;

    The association was previously known as the European Travel and Tourism Advisory Group (ETAG), founded in the early 1980s. The association's name was changed to the European Tourism Association AISBL in 2017; its purposes are unchanged.

    Other activities

    In 2020 the association formed strategic sustainability partnerships with Fair Climate Fund, and Tourism Declares a Climate Emergency. Further information on ETOA and climate available here: www.etoa.org/climate.

    In 2020 we formed a strategic partnership with Group NAO. We supported their work in conjunction with European Cities Marketing in relation to DMO funding and tourism taxes.

    In December 2019 the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with UIC in support of its TopRail project.

    In May 2019 the association formed an alliance on sustainable tourism with CELTH, ETC and NECSTouR. https://www.etoa.org/new-partnership-sustainable-tourism/

    In January 2019 the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CELTH - Centre of Expertise, leisure tourism and hospitality.

    In April 2018 the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NECSTouR (the Network of European Regions for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism).

    July-Sept 2018 it conducted market research in China and India on the impact of Schengen visa processing. Results were published in January 2019 and are available at: https://bit.ly/2Rnxa07

    The association is developing its dialogue with destinations, running working groups in Amsterdam, Barcelona, Paris and Rome.

    Organisational background

    The association was previously known as the European Travel and Tourism Advisory Group (ETAG) and was founded in the early 1980s. Latterly it had become largely dormant.

    The European Tour Operators Association Limited, (ETOA Ltd), known as the European tourism association, became a member of ETAG in 2017 at its invitation in order to support its formal purposes more actively.

    ETOA Ltd. was established in 1989, initially as a voice of incoming tourism to Europe; its membership and partnership network includes over 1000 business and other organisations from B2B and B2C operators to suppliers and destination managements organisations. Its transparency register ID is 700500614404-28.

    The association's name was changed to the European Tourism Association AISBL in 2017; its purposes are unchanged.
