The association has been largely inactive in recent years so financial assets and activity were negligible in year to end 2017. Its membership changed in the second half of 2017; a review of business model and related financial arrangements is in progress at time of update. The association's purpose remains the same.

The association was previously known as the European Travel and Tourism Advisory Group (ETAG) and was founded in the early 1980s. In recent years it had become largely dormant.

The European Tour Operators Association Limited, (ETOA Ltd), known as the European tourism association, became a member of ETAG in 2017 at its invitation in order to support its formal purposes more actively.

ETOA Ltd. was established in 1989, initially as a voice of incoming tourism to Europe; its membership and partnership network includes over 1000 business and other organisations from B2B and B2C operators to suppliers and destination managements organisations. Its transparency register ID is 700500614404-28.

The association's name was changed to the European Tourism Association AISBL in 2017; its purposes are unchanged.

In April 2018 the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with NECSTouR (the Network of European Regions for a Sustainable and Competitive Tourism). In January 2019 the association signed a Memorandum of Understanding with CELTH - Centre of Expertise, leisure tourism and hospitality.

July-Sept 2019 it conducted market research in China and India on the impact of Schengen visa processing. Results were published in January 2019 and are available at: https://bit.ly/2Rnxa07

The association is developing its dialogue with destinations, running working groups in Amsterdam, Barcelona and Paris.
