    Goals / Remit

The European Travel Retail Council (ETRC) is a council of national trade associations whose members are the individual companies operating in European duty free and travel retail markets, including airports, scheduled and charter airlines, ferry companies, retail shop operators, brand owners, distributors and their agents.

The ETRC is an umbrella organisation whose mission is to represent, both within Europe and internationally, the interests of its members that retail tax and duty free products and services to international travellers, as well as those operating in the European tax and duty paid travel retail trading environment that developed following abolition of intra-EU tax and duty free sales on June 30th 1999. With membership from the Tax Free World Association (TFWA), the ETRC now represents over 500 European companies.

Its goal is to obtain the most favourable operating environment for travel related commerce through advancing the interests of its members in contacts with national governments and the EU institutions.

    This will be achieved through:

    1. Representing the membership's agreed common interests at the EU and European level to influence regulatory proposals and legislation.

    2. Strengthening and protecting the industry through the development of comprehensive industry representation and the provision of necessary resources.

    3. Influencing legislative activities and regulatory issues that may impact on members' interests at both the European and global level.

    4. Promoting the economic value of the industry.

    5. Promoting the growth and expansion of the industry.

    6. Facilitating communication between members to allow coordination and support on common issues.

    Other financial info

The ETRC is funded through subscriptions received from national affiliated trade associations and through campaign donations from individual companies working in the duty free and travel retail trade across Europe and beyond.

Since 2009, a new category of membership has been established that allows companies operating in the market to become Corporate Members of the council.

As at the end of 2010, ETRC had 30 Corporate Members: 10 from the beauty and fragrances category, 5 liquor companies, 9 retailers, 2 from the food sector and 4 from the tobacco industry.

For the avoidance of doubt, ETRC wishes to state clearly that the four corporate members from the tobacco industry, namely JTI, BATI PMWT and Imperial Tobacco International, do pay membership fees to ETRC and take part in ETRC activities.
