    Goals / Remit

    EVU is the voice of the European vegetarian and vegan movement. Its aim is to make the vegetarian and meat-reduced lifestyle safe for consumers, producers and traders and provide adequate information on related health issues, as well ass on plant health, animal health and welfare and environmental protection, with respect to a vegetarian lifestyle.

    The EVU was founded in 1988 and is representing 45 national member organisations in 30 countries. It is funded mainly by membership fees. Any autonomous European organisation working in the vegetarian sector can have full membership with voting rights. The EVU is politically, ethnically and religiously neutral, independent and autonomous.

    As the only European organisation for the 25 million vegetarians in Europe, the EVU holds a monopoly position.

    The EVU:

    - offers a platform for close cooperation, acts as media resource for the dissemination of information on vegetarianism;
    - cooperates with other institutions and organisations for greater recognition of vegetarian issues;
    - helps and supports national and international events;
    - gives advice to, promotes and/or acts as a resource for other vegetarian organisations;
    - promotes the production and use of vegetarian products to benefit people, animals and the environment; and
    - promotes the production and use of vegetarian products to benefit people, animals and the environment.

    The EVU is the first contact at European level for media inquiries on vegetarian food and issues on the vegetarian diet.One of EVU’s main concerns is consumer protection in the field of vegetarianism. For that purpose the EVU promoted the EU-wide definition of “vegetarian” and “vegan“ to be introduced by the European Commission in 2012. It also provides the European V-label, a quality seal for products in line with the EU-wide definitions. Currently over 100 European companies make use of the V-label. In this way, consumers’ trust and have confidence in the EU food supply and traders/producers are enabled to supply a trend which is increasingly growing.

    It is the EVU’s aim to stimulate research in the areas of vegetarianism, healthy nutrition, animal protection and environmental protection, and to distribute that research by providing target group oriented information to consumers, economical actors and the political sphere alike. Therefore it provides free nutritional consultancy via national consumer hotlines, information material on well-balanced food, dietary reference values and dietary guidelines like a nutritional pyramid as well as research and data collections into real and ideal nutrient uptake and the occurrence of nutrition-related diseases like cardiovascular diseases or adipositas. The EVU is continuously requested for independent scientific advice on food, food safety and reference values for nutrition in the field of vegetarianism and it therefore either refers to EFSA standards or has to initiate its own work, the results of which it communicates to national membership organisations, authorities and media. The EVU also aims to advocate on animal protection and animal rights and the promotion of environment protection issues in relation to nutritional lifestyles.
