Elle prend la succession du « Allgemeinen Handwerkerverband » fondé en 1905. A travers son appartenance à une fédération professionnelle , chaque entreprise est automatiquement membre de l'organe central de l'Artisanat.
La Fédération des Artisans ensemble avec ses membres définit la politique générale de l'Artisanat, qu'elle a mission de promouvoir aussi bien auprès de ses membres que sur la place publique. La Fédération des Artisans est une organisation professionnelle forte et estimée comme telle des milieux politiques et économiques.
