Goals / Remit
Friends of Europe is an independent not-for-profit Brussels-based tank that connects people, stimulates debate and triggers change to create a more inclusive, sustainable and forward-looking Europe. This is achieved through our debates, conferences, working groups, reports and recommendations which provide bold and ambitious but practical solutions. We aim to be catalysts for change and believe that real solutions come from transforming mind-sets through the confrontation of ideas and the breaking down of silos between politicians, businesses and civil society. Believing that change is achieved through inclusive policies and action, we reach out to and work with a wide network of policymakers, international organisations, civil society representatives, business leaders, academics, the media and citizens across Europe and beyond. We have no national or party political bias and ensure that all viewpoints are represented in our activities and publications. We foster open, insightful and provocative debates to stimulate fresh ideas and creative thinking. Our portfolio of events and reports means that Friends of Europe contributes ideas and leads the debate on a wide range of EU-related issues. We offer Europe’s citizens an opportunity to take an active transformational role in shaping their environment. We use ground-breaking online brainstorms to bring different stakeholder groups together from all over the world and constantly innovate in how we convene and shape discussions.

Friends of Europe’s day-to-day activities include organising conferences and debates and publishing reports and policy briefs. In this sense and as requested by the European Commission, all of Friends of Europe’s staff may be said to be engaged in activities falling under the scope of the Transparency register even if a number of them only deal with logistics of events, layout of reports, accounting, IT support, etc... The objective of Friends of Europe’s activities is to foster discussion and debate among the EU’s leaders and citizens on the issues that shape their future and to debate and circulate useful ideas for a more forward-looking, inclusive and sustainable Europe, obviously NOT to push any specific political or business interest.

Other financial info
In relation to the estimated costs attributable to activities covered by the Register: Following clarifications from the European Commission, Friends of Europe has now listed its entire budget for its work programme in the estimate of the annual costs related to activities covered by the register, therefore including all staff as well as costs such as IT, catering, printing. Friends of Europe’s day-to-day activities include organising conferences and debates and publishing reports and policy briefs. In this sense, all of Friends of Europe’s budget involved in these activities may be said to be engaged in activities falling under the scope of the Transparency register. However, it should be stressed that the objective of Friends of Europe’s activities is to foster discussion and debate among the EU’s leaders and citizens on the issues that shape their future and to debate and circulate useful ideas for a more forward-looking, inclusive and sustainable Europe, NOT to push any specific political or business interest. Friends of Europe therefore does not have nor use any funds for lobbying for a specific business or political cause other than to work for a more forward looking, sustainable and functional Europe of solidarity and partnership with prosperity and equal opportunities for all.
In 2015, Friends of Europe set up a Transparency and Independence Board which helps define, refine and verify its credentials in terms of financial transparency and independence. Members include: Stephanie Blenckner, Thomas Fischer, Monica Frassoni, Gie Goris, Philippe Maze-Sencier, Conny Reuter and Jonathan Worth.
Friends of Europe has a strong track record of successful partnerships with a range of public and private organisations. These partnerships enable Friends of Europe to cement its pan-European standing and to achieve its aim of improving communication between the EU and its citizens.
Friends of Europe’s sources of finance include European and international institutions, governments, diplomatic missions, regional offices, foundations, NGOs, business and industry, SMEs, trade associations and chambers of commerce.
Friends of Europe does not represent the interests of its members who in fact pay an annual "participation fee" without any other prerogative or role in the governance of Friends of Europe. Membership guarantees participation at all our debates, hard copies of our reports and networking opportunities.
In addition to membership, Friends of Europe offers a number of partnership packages (project support), ranging from small agreements for a single debate or report to multi-annual agreements for a series of high-level activities.
Friends of Europe is an independent think-tank for EU policy analysis and debate. It is politically neutral, does not have party-political or national bias and does not represent any corporate or other interest. It advocates a better understanding of the challenges facing Europe and its citizens and the discussion and circulation of ideas on a more efficient, more forward-looking, inclusive and sustainable Europe. Friends of Europe therefore does not have or use any funds for lobbying for a specific business or political cause.

Friends of Europe is an independent think tank that produces analysis of policy developments, organises debates, publishes reports and engages in pan-European dialogues on a more efficient, more forward-looking, inclusive and sustainable Europe.
Given the broad definition of the scope of the Transparency register which covers “all activities designed to influence – directly or indirectly – policymaking, policy implementation and decision-making in the EU institutions”, in a large interpretation virtually all of Friends of Europe’s activities may be said to fall under it. In 2018, Friends of Europe organised over 50 events, issued aver 45 publications, and organised massive on-line debates. Details of all of which may be found on www.friendsofeurope.org- Meetings
