    Goals / Remit

ZOE, the Institute for future-fit Economies, is an independent economic think tank that develops answers to the global challenges of the 21st century as an incubator for new economic thinking. We focus on innovatively linking different economic theories and methods, which enables an integrated view on topics of the socio-ecological transformation. At the interface of science, politics and civil society, ZOE sees itself as a catalyst for an integrative and sustainable economic order and promotes it through scientific contributions and transfer activities such as conferences, symposia and workshops.

Its fields of work include economic research, scientific policy advice and educational trainings.

In our research we use a broad methodological approach, ranging from quantitative economic research and modelling of complex systems (complexity economics, ecological economics) to qualitative work in institutional economics and economic transformation research.

Scientific policy advice ensures the translation of our research content. The cross-cutting topic of our advice activities is the consistent integration of social and ecological goals into economic policy. For the development of recommendations for action, we use a co-creative methodology that is result-oriented and builds on the knowledge of various stakeholder groups.

Our research is focused on four topics.

    New economic thinking:
Today's economics is largely about rationality, efficiency and growth. Often a reflection on normative assumptions is neglected. We investigate how different theoretical and methodological perspectives can be successfully combined and what this means for economic research and education.

    Sustainable industrial policy:
Globalisation and free trade have not only produced winners, but also losers. We investigate how the trend of increasing socio-economic polarization can be reversed with the help of sustainable industrial policy.

    Independence from growth
Growth rates in the industrialized countries have been declining for years. At the same time, it has not been possible to substantially reduce resource and energy consumption. In order to achieve sustainable prosperity, it is essential that industrial nations and companies become independent of economic growth. We ask what political framework conditions are needed to achieve this.

    Sustainable social security:
Digitalisation, demographic change and increasing competitive pressure confront the social systems with multiple challenges. Despite increasing prosperity, security is becoming increasingly precarious in many areas. We are looking for measures that show options for action at the entrepreneurial, political and civil society level for socially and ecologically sustainable social security.
