    Goals / Remit

ICAN is a broad, inclusive campaign, focused on mobilizing civil society around the world to support the specific objective of prohibiting and eliminating nuclear weapons. The ICAN international structure consists of partner organizations, an international steering group and an international staff team.

As of 2020, ICAN has 547 partner organisations in 103 countries.

ICAN has been awarded the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition for its efforts to raise awareness on the humanitarian impact of nuclear weapons, leading to the adoption in 2017 of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) at the United Nations.

ICAN’s headquarters is in Geneva, Switzerland.

    Main EU files targeted

We call on all EU Member States and institutions to support the prohibition of nuclear weapons under international law, and adopt policies and practices consistent with this goal.

This touches on parliamentary resolutions in the areas of foreign affairs, security and defence, but also EU activities such as the think tanks participating in the EU Nonproliferation and Disarmament Consortium, European Commission initiatives on humanitarian aid, civil protection, and disaster preparedness, the consistency of Euratom safeguards with the UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, and the positioning of the European External Action Services under the guidance of the Special Envoy for Nonproliferation.
