Goals / Remit
The association’s social purpose of national and international utility is the defence of human rights, including civil and political rights as well as economic, cultural and social rights; the rights of women, children and other vulnerable groups; the promotion of the rule of law and democracy, as well as development aid.
To reach its purpose, the association may undertake activities such as:
- concrete assistance to local human rights associations throughout the world by offering targeted expertise in designing and developing human rights projects on a national, regional or international scale;
- search for funding from private foundations and public financial backers, including European funding, to support local associations’ projects throughout the world;
- partnership with other local or international groups on human rights, democracy, rule of law or development projects;

IPHR has one full time advocacy director based in Brussels. Two other colleagues spend around 10% of their time in EU advocacy.
Advocacy as done by IPHR staff vis-a-vis envisages - regular visit to the European Parliament to: 1) meet with MEPs from AFET, DROI and sometimes INTA committees, 2) meet with staffers in AFET, DROI and INTA committees 3) meet with MEPs from the delegations to South Caucasus, Central Asia, Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus, Russia 4) meeting with the staffers of the secretariat of the delegations 5) attend the hearings of the committees 6) attend the meetings/conferences in the European Parliament 7) at times we have asked MEP(s) to host or co-host our events/conferences
IPHR staff also does advocacy vis-a-vis other EU institutions, notably with DG DEVCO, DG Trade, EEAS, and member states Permanent Representations.
Additionally IPHR organises 1-2 a year visits for human rights defenders and activists from the countries we cover: Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
During these visits IPHR organises bilateral or group meetings with relevant EU stakeholders, among them with MEPs, and staffers of relevant committees and EP delegations.
IPHR is a member of Human Rights and Democracy Network (HRDN) and is currently one of the members of three-person management Troika. -
