    Goals / Remit

The Ithaka Institute a non-profit research institute. Over the past decade, Ithaka has become a leading research collaboration for carbon sequestration and recycling through agronomic methods including biochar, rock powder application, agroforestry and other approaches. The institute is known for its expertise in the production, refinement and use of biochar, as well as the quantification of its impact. We are involved in several food security, soil fertility and reforestation projects in Europe, East Asia and the Caribbean. Ithaka develops the concept of Pyrogenic Carbon Capture and Storage. In 2012, Ithaka established the European Biochar Certificate EBC (www.european-biochar.org), which certifies sustainable and clean biochar and standardizes the analytics of biochar. In 2020, certification of the carbon sink performance of biochar was added to the EBC.

    Main EU files targeted

    Our goal are:
    (1) A scientifically sound approval and regulation of pyrolysis products such as biochar, especially, but not restricted to, the fertilizer sector.
    (2) A scientifically sound regulation of calculation, accounting and certification of negative emissions obtained from both nature-based and industrial solutions.
    (3) A science-based implementation of "enhanced weathering" as a climate technology
