    European Generic medicines Association   (EGA)

    EU Transparency Register

    48325781850-28 First registered on 16 Jun 2009

    Goals / Remit

The European Generic medicines Association represents the European generic and biosimilar pharmaceutical industries, which provide high-quality cost-competitive medicines to millions of Europeans. Companies represented within the EGA provide over 160,000 jobs in Europe. Generic medicines save EU patients and healthcare systems over €40 billion each year and account for 55% of all dispensed medicines but for only 21% of the pharmaceutical expenditure in Europe.

Formed in 1993, the EGA represents generic pharmaceutical companies and their subsidiaries from throughout Europe, either directly or through national associations.

The EGA and its member companies and associations support and promote:
•The sustainability and competitiveness of the European generic and biosimilar medicines industry
•European, national and regional measures which increase market access to generic and biosimilar medicines
•The creation of a European regulatory and IP framework that ensures immediate access to the post-patent market for generic and biosimilar medicines
•Global adoption of high quality EU-like standards for APIs, generic medicines and biosimilar medicines

The EGA is a founding member of the International Generic Pharmaceutical Alliance (IGPA) and has NGO status with WHO.

The EGA has subscribed to the Transparency register set up and operated by the European Parliament and the European Commission.

The EGA is also Member of the EUnetHTA Stakeholder Forum, a network of government appointed organisations (from EU Member States, EEA and Accession countries) and a large number of relevant regional agencies and non-for-profit organisations that produce or contribute to HTA in Europe.

The WHO Executive Board decided at its 134th session to maintain the European Generic medicines Association in official relations with the World Health Organization. In making its decision, the Board commended the continuing dedication of the EGA organization in support of the work of WHO.
•Background documents and priority agenda items of this session can be found here: 134th WHO Executive Board session

    Main EU files targeted

The EGA plays an important consultative part in European healthcare policy-making and provides key educational role for its members. The EGA and its members work with European national governments and the EU institutions to develop sustainable solutions for pharmaceutical care and to increase Europe’s competitive strength in the global pharmaceutical medicines market.
