    Complementary Information

MHE’s decision-making bodies reflect the diversity in the organization’s membership. The MHE Board, Executive Committee and President are elected every 3 years. Together with the General Assembly (GA), they form the pillars of the organization and guarantee its democratic decision-making process. The GA is the highest authority and is responsible for formulating the organization’s policy. The Board is the body elected by the GA to develop a strategy for implementing the organization’s policy, while the Executive Committee is elected by the Board and is responsible for the daily management and for supervising the work of the Secretariat.
MHE also has several Committees and Task Forces set up to support the work in specific policy areas or concerning particular topics. The Secretariat is also supported by Senior Policy Advisers, who are specialists in their particular policy areas.
MHE has 74 member organisations in 33 different countries and a number of individual members.

In its policy work, Mental Health Europe:

    • Provides evidence-based input on the critical mental health implications of social, health and justice policy areas to European institutions and other EU stakeholders
    • Develops recommendations for policies and strategies focused on mental health issues undertaken by the EU or its Member States.
    • Promotes respect of human rights of people with mental health problems to underpin all policy initiatives of relevance to them.
    • Mobilises multi-stakeholder exchange on policy areas of relevance to mental health and well-being.

In practical terms, MHE monitors and analyses EU policy proposals, decisions, legislation, and processes in the field of EU social and health policy as well as the activities of the European Court of Human Rights. Policy Officers are therefore responsible for the development and targeted dissemination of position papers and engage in dialogue with the European Institutions and other key stakeholders based on communication and consultation with the MHE membership. They also ensure the flow of information and communication between the MHE Secretariat, the European Institutions and the MHE members working at the local, national and regional level, and support and advise MHE members on taking part in key policy processes and exchanging expertise and good practices with each other and external stakeholders.

MHE Policy Officers also participate in relevant meetings and conferences on behalf of MHE and also help organise meetings, capacity-building seminars and trainings for MHE members.
