    Communication activities

In June 2021, in the frame of the All-Atlantic 2021 Conference, MOi organised 3 side events related to the G7 Future of the Seas and Oceans Initiative and GEO Blue Planet about global ocean data sharing and infrastructure, monitoring and managing marine litter and Sargassum in the Atlantic Ocean. For ensuring Copernicus Marine Service visibility, MOi has jointly developed with the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and the NGO Sulitest.org the very first educational module dedicated to the Ocean and SDG14 “Life below Water. The module was launched in July 2021 during the UN HLPF Event with Bernhard Friess, Maritime Policy and Blue Economy Director, EC Maritime Affairs and Fisheries. In Fall 2021, MOi has jointly developed with EUMETSAT, ECMWF and EEA a new massive open online course (MOOC) on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Earth monitoring for the Copernicus Programme (EC DG DEFIS). MOI has published the summary of the fifth Ocean State Report, available in a concise, illustrated, and easily accessible format, that is intended to act as a reference for the scientific community, policy-makers in charge of coastal and marine activities, and the general public to better understand the importance and impacts of a changing ocean. On 27 September, Mercator Ocean International (MOi) held an open community dialogue meeting to discuss MOi’s candidature to host the first Collaborative Centre for Ocean Prediction in support of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade)aligned with the EU Green Deal. Over 60 participants attended the meeting from 18 countries representing 28 programmes, projects, and organisations working on various aspects of ocean prediction. This dialogue has continued with EC DG Research and Innovation's Healthy Ocean and Seas Unit. On Oct2021, MOi published its “Journal Issue 57: The Copernicus Marine Service, Copernicus 1 Achievements from 2015 to 2021” marking the end of the first phase of Copernicus. It was presented at the Copernicus Marine and WEkEO Services kick-off event on 12 October 2021, ensuring the continuity of Marine Earth Observations and monitoring powered by the European Union. The event, hosted by the EC DG DEFIS was opened by its Director-General, Timo Pesonen who shared key messages on the Marine’s Service results and the European Commissions’ ambitions for Copernicus and its Services in Copernicus 2 (2021 – 2027). MOi reinforced its commitment to GEO during the GEOWEEK 2021 (November) by presenting the work of the European Coordination Office of GEO’s Blue Planet Initiative, that it has been hosting since 2020, as part of the EU4OceanObs Foreign Policy Instrument Action of the European Commission. The #OceanChallenge4Africa online hackathon has been launched in February 2022 (to be held on April 8-10) and aims to gather participants to tackle ocean challenges in the coastal and marine regions of Africa. Teams will be invited to create innovative and impact-driven ocean solutions using Copernicus marine earth-observation data, to contribute to the sustainable use of ocean and coastal resources in Africa. In the frame of the French Presidency of the EU Council, at the One Ocean Summit organised by France in Brest, from the 9th to 11th of February 2022, six European States showed commitment to developing EUropean oceanographic excellence by transforming Mercator Ocean into an intergovernmental body by 2024. This was solidified in the “Declaration of Brest” presented during the “Commitment to a world digital ocean and the transformation of Mercator Ocean into an international organisation” event. Commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries brought his support during the event as Copernicus Marine Service and EMODnet are two pillars of the next EU Digital Twin Ocean, announced by the President of the EC Ursula von der Leyen on February 11th and a key objective of the EU Mission "Restore our Oceans and Waters by 2030".
