    Goals / Remit

The National Advisory Council of the Thalidomide Trust is a user-based body that represents currently 443 beneficiaries of the Thalidomide Trust and assists the management with its objectives one of which is to ensure a beneficiary-centred approach in all Trust activities - with an emphasis on equity, empowerment and support. Thalidomide caused congenital damages to new-borns in the UK, Germany, Sweden and in almost all European countries in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Since 2014 we campaign at the European Parliament for support for all thalidomide survivors across the EU and Europe. One of the milestones was the European Parliament resolution on support for the thalidomide survivors (2016/3029(RSP) passed in December 2016.

    Main EU files targeted

The EU Parliament passed a motion - partly based on our advocacy - calling upon the German government and Grunenthal GmbH to meet its responsibilities toward thalidomide survivors in the UK, Sweden, Spain and Italy In December 2016. (European Parliament resolution on support for the thalidomide survivors (2016/3029(RSP)) The Thalidomide Trust continues to work with MEPs who remain committed to this goal.
More recently, members of the Thalidomide Trust campaign team worked with the Health Commissioner and German MEPs to ensure that the thalidomide survivors across Europe could gain access to financial assistance through the social inclusion element of the 2021 ESF+ budget.
The Thalidomide Trust campaigns team continues to meet with MEPs from all nations to represent thalidomide survivors across Europe and the European Union. In 2022-23 campaign team members met German MEPs from the Social Democrat and Green partz.
