La OSF si occupa di studi complessi sull'oceano e sui mari del mondo. Conduce ricerche in tutti i settori delle scienze marine, tra cui fisica, climatologia, chimica, biologia e geologia dell'oceano e dei mari, biologia spaziale, diritto dell'ecologia e governance territoriale, economia ecologica.
