    Goals / Remit

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. We are a UK-based charity that brings together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

We stage an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.

At the Summit, delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces.

At past Summits delegates were joined by a line-up of Counsellors that included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Sir Bob Geldof, Kofi Annan, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Emma Watson, Jack Dorsey and Arianna Huffington.

    Communication activities

Since 2017 One Young World (OYW) has partnered with the European Commission (EC) to empower young leaders in developing countries to contribute to conflict prevention and peacebuilding in their communities. The cornerstone of this project is the identification of a delegation of young peacebuilders from developing countries to participate in the annual OYW Summit.

    Phase 1
The initial cohort of 80 of OYW Peace Ambassadors was identified to participate in the OYW Summit 2017 which took place in Bogota, Colombia. In addition to the cohort’s participation in the Summit, OYW built a dedicated area for the young leaders on the OYW website, fostered dialogue and shaped debate around the key themes of their engagement through on-line tools, ensured communications and media coverage around the programme and facilitated participation of the young leaders in other relevant peace & security-related events.

    Phase 2
OYW renewed its partnership with the EC in 2018 to identify 40 young peacebuilders from developing countries to participate in the OYW Summit 2018 held in the Hague, The Netherlands. OYW curated additional learning and networking opportunities to further contribute to the personal development of the Peace Ambassadors. These included:

    - An expert workshop delivered by The Institute for Strategic Dialogue on the importance of communications in P/CVE.
    - Learning opportunities with Extremely Together, a P/CVE group supported by OYW and The Kofi Annan Foundation.
    - Kigali Caucus - OYW Peace Ambassadors were invited to attend an expert Caucus on P/CVE in Rwanda in March 2019. The event included the EU Ambassador to Rwanda Mr. Nicola Bellomo as a speaker.

    Phase 3
In 2019, OYW and the EC brought together a third cohort of OYW Peace Ambassadors to participate in the OYW Summit 2019 held in London, UK. The 2019 Peace Ambassadors also took part in a bespoke workshop dedicated to P/CVE. OYW’s main point of contact within the EC at that time was Mathias Madsen. Mr Madsen participated in the 2019 Summit where he engaged with the 2019 Peace Ambassador cohort.

Following the Summit, OYW planned to deliver a second Peace Caucus in Bogota, Colombia akin to the 2019 Kigali event. Owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, this event was transformed into a digital engagement. The event was delivered on 6 July 2020 and convened Peace Ambassadors from across the three cohorts and other members of the OYW Ambassador community in LATAM.

    Phase 4
OYW and the EC renewed their partnership to empower young leaders working on countering violent extremism by identifying a fourth cohort of 50 Peace Ambassadors to participate in the OYW Summit 2020 in Munich, Germany. The Summit was originally scheduled to take place in October, 2020 but was postponed to July 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

From 22-25 July 2021, a cohort of 50 Peace Ambassadors attended the OYW Summit in Munich where 6 selected Peace Ambassadors gave a keynote speech and two of the speakers also had the opportunity to run a Q&A session on the interactive stage.

Natalie Pauwels attended the Summit and led an interactive session on “Promoting the resilience of at-risk youth against disinformation in the Covid-19 era.” The Ambassadors also attended an exclusive workshop designed by the Institute for Economics and Peace on the pillars of building Positive Peace. From 12-13 November, Peace Ambassadors were invited to attend a digital Peace Caucus.

    Other activities

    European Development Days
In addition to delivering the Peace Ambassador Programme, One Young World has also been involved in an organisational capacity with the European Development Days 2018 organised by the EC, which took place on 5 and 6 June 2018.
