    Goals / Remit

One Young World was founded in 2009 by David Jones and Kate Robertson. We are a UK-based charity that gathers together the brightest young leaders from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections to create positive change.

We stage an annual Summit where the most valuable young talent from global and national companies, NGOs, universities and other forward-thinking organisations are joined by world leaders, acting as the One Young World Counsellors.

At the Summit, delegates debate, formulate and share innovative solutions for the pressing issues the world faces.

At past Summits delegates were joined by a line-up of Counsellors that included Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, Sir Bob Geldof, Kofi Annan, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Professor Muhammad Yunus, Emma Watson, Jack Dorsey and Arianna Huffington.

To date One Young World Summits have been held in:

    2010 - London, UK
    2011 - Zurich, Switzerland
    2012 - Pittsburgh, USA
    2013 - Johannesburg, South Africa
    2014 - Dublin, Ireland
    2015 - Bangkok, Thailand
    2016 - Ottawa, Canada
    2017 - Bogota, Colombia

After each Summit, the delegates, who are then known as One Young World Ambassadors, work on their own initiatives or lend the power of the One Young World network to those initiatives already in existence. Of those in employment, many return to their companies and set about creating change from within, energising their corporate environment.

The Ambassador community is supported by a dedicated One Young World team whose mission is to maximise the benefits each Ambassador is able to draw from the network. Services they provide include:

    - Creating and connecting Ambassadors with opportunities to further their work and development post-Summit. Opportunities range from grants to speaking engagements.

    - Making fruitful connections between Ambassadors to share skills and best practice to further their work.

    - Highlighting and raising awareness of Ambassador initiatives through One Young World’s online platforms and mainstream media outreach.

    - Coordinating local events to give Ambassadors the opportunity to meet and network in between Summits.

    - Involving Ambassadors in One Young World’s Global Consultation Process, which is used to define the agenda of each Summit, thereby ensuring that the event is a true reflection of the Ambassador community which it serves.

One Young World is funded primarily by the sale of tickets to the annual One Young World Summit. Ticket sales are primarily made to corporate partners which subsequently send members of staff to participate in the event. A full list of partners that purchased tickets for the 2016 Summit can be found via the link below.

    https://www.oneyoungworld.com/support-2017-summit

A small percentage of One Young World Summit tickets are purchased directly by individuals rather than the organisations that employ them. The revenue generated by these individual purchases is reflected in the 'One Young World Summit tickets' amount provided but the names of these individuals are not provided on the above link.

One Young World has also been the recipient of a small grant from the Kofi Annan Foundation. The purpose of this grant is to fund the salary of a project officer to coordinate the Extremely Together Project.

    Communication activities

The One Young World Summit 2017 will take place in Bogotá, Colombia. The Summit will bring together 1,300 young leaders from more than 190+ countries. The Summit’s central theme is role of young people in transitional justice and peace building.

One Young World seeks a partnership with the EU to create an EU funded scholarship to enable young African peace builders to participate in the 2016 Summit. During the Summit these scholars would attend a range of sessions designed to improve their practical skills in the field of peace building. In addition the scholars would take part in one day fact finding mission, visiting peace building programmes around Bogota in order to learn and exchange best practice with their Colombian counterparts.

We believe this partnership will further the aims of both the Africa-EU Partnership and the EU Trust Fund for Colombia by building the capacity of both African and Colombian peace builders.

Efforts to create this partnership have involved contacting staff of EU institutions. Specifically our staff have had contact with the Deputy Head of Neven Mimica's cabinet Irena Andrassy.

In addition, One Young World is a delivery partner on a European Commission funded project known as Extremely Together.

Extremely Together is a counter violent extremism (CVE) initiative led by the Kofi Annan Foundation and supported by European Commission funding.

The project has brought together ten young leaders with proven track-records in preventing and countering violent extremism in their communities. Under the banner “Extremely Together” they have pooled their ideas to produce a toolkit enabling them, their peers and thousands of young people around the world, to turn the tide in the fight against extremism.

The ten Extremely Together advocates have also made appearances at a number of national and international events to propagate the role that young people can play in combating violent extremism.

The One Young World Summit 2016 in Ottawa featured an Extremely Together panel session which saw the ten advocates joined by Kofi Annan to present their work.

One Young World has assisted this initiative from its outset by offering advice at the strategic planning stage and assisting with the recruitment and selection of the ten advocates. On an ongoing basis One Young World hired a CVE expert on a part-time basis who is seconded to the Kofi Annan Foundation to coordinate Extremely Together. One Young World provides ongoing communications support to Extremely Together by promoting the project through the OYW Ambassador network.

One Young World is currently named as a co-organiser of a launch event for the Extremely Together toolkit which will take place in Brussels on 28 March. Neven Mimica will speak at this event and numerous Members have been invited to attend by our co-organisers CT-MORSE.
