    Prof. Johan Rockström, Director of PIK, is a member of European Commission expert group: Mission Board for adaptation to climate change including societal transformations ( 2019-2025)
    Johan Rockström is a member of the European Investment Bank’s new Climate and Environment Council, which is chaired by Christine Lagard, President of the European Central Bank.

    PIK Director Prof. Ottmar Edenhofer is Chair of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change (ESABCC) of the European Environment Agency (appointed by the EU) 2022-2026.

    Dr. Michael Pahle was appointed a member of the consultative working group for the standing Risk Committee of the European Securities and Markets Authority 's (ESMA) in 2023

    Members of PIK participated in 2023 in: activities around ESABCC Report ‘Scientific advice for the determination of an EU-wide 2040 climate target and a greenhouse gas budget for 2030–2050’., including presentation of the report to the European Commission on 14.06.2023 and at the European Parliament’s ENVI Committee (Ottmar Edenhofer), discussion of ESABCC's scientific advice for the determination of an EU-wide 2040 climate target and a greenhouse gas budget for 2030-2050 e.g. with the EC AGRI Committee and with European Environment Ministers (Ottmar Edenhofer), ESABCC Chair Mission in Brussels meeting EVP Maroš Šefčovic, European Commission Executive Vice-President for European Green Deal, Interinstitutional Relations and Foresight. Furthermore, Prof. Edenhofer held Strategic discussions with high-ranking EU politicians and officials in Brussels: President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, Frans Timmermans, Ruth Reichstein, Elina Bardram, Elena Visnar and Kurt Vandenberghe.

    Advisory activities of other PIK scientists included: providing a briefing note entitled “The EU’s 2040 target – Insights from the NAVIGATE project” to the European Commission (Elmar Kriegler), invited participation in discussion workshop on ‘How will the ETS2 work?’ with experts, representatives of DG CLIMATE and the European Commission (Michael Pahle and Robert Pietzcker) and evidence supplied to the EU public consultation on the EU 2040 targets (Robert Pietzcker); hosting a visit of the 27 EU Ambassadors to PIK (7.6.2023, Ottmar Edenhofer and Johan Rockström), talks and presentations with the EU Commission (e.g. DG Environment in European Green Week) or members of EU Parliament (Johan Rockström).

    Other activities

    Several PIK scientists spoke at to European Commission members or at meetings in 2020. E.g. H.J. Schellnhuber spoke to European Green Deal Advisor Kurt Vandemberghe in March and September 2020; W. Lucht gave a keynote talk for a high-level policy briefing for members of The European Commission and NEGEM Advisory Board on 11.06.2020; C. Gornott presented the AGRICA project on climate risk analysis at a Climate Change and Development conference organised by the Climate Change and Development Group of EU DEVCO.
