    Goals / Remit

    Quercus - ANCN (www.quercus.pt) is a non-profit, independent, environmental non-governamental organization, founded in 31st of October 1985. Its general objectives are:

    - Research, safeguard and raise knowledge for a better biophysical environment, advocating and promoting the conservation of natural and cultural values;
    - Increase public participation, but also promote environmental education activities;
    - Provide awareness and support to citizens about technical, scientific and juridical information about environmental issues.

    Throughout the years, Quercus has been specialized its activities in several working areas, such as:

    - Climate change;
    - Noise and air quality;
    - Energy efficiency and renewable energies;
    - Transport and mobility issues;
    - Nature conservation;
    - Urban planning;
    - Water quality and management;
    - Waste management.

    Quercus organizational structure is based on 18 local groups, geographically spread from North to South of Portugal (including Azores and Madeira islands) that allows a decentralized work and intervention. At the present time, Quercus has 16.500 registered members. Quercus owns almost 600 ha of properties near Tagus River that are prepared for eco-tourism and nature conservation activities. It also has 3 Environmental Educational Centers and manages 3 Wildlife Rehabilitation Centres.
