Explanatory notes
Net income (money available for charitable purposes), at £90.1 million, was slightly up on the previous year.
Net income is shown after deducting the £18.9 million cost of generating income and a further £13.1 million cost of goods for resale by our trading operation. The majority of products sold, such as bird food and feeders, optics, wildlife books and videos, relate directly to our charitable objectives.
The cost of generating income increased to reflect our move from subscriptions towards donations. The generosity of our supporters is reflected in the increased income this generated and is shown within Membership subscriptions and donations. With around 90 per cent of our members continuing their support from year to year, we expect to enjoy the benefits from this for many years.
Expenditure on charitable purposes
Expenditure, at £85.8 million, was at a similar level to last year, however investment in land purchases and associated visitor facilities fell by £1.3 million. The reduced availability of some grant funding from Governments and the high price of land continue to constrain us.
The amount we spent on our conservation and education work was similar to the previous year. With economic conditions showing little sign of making a robust and sustained recovery we continued with our cautious approach to expenditure commitments.
Administrative overheads, governance and membership-related costs are typically around 10 per cent of our income available for charitable purposes. This leaves 90 per cent of our resources available to be spent directly on our conservation objectives.
Net operating income and financial reserves
The RSPB is committed to putting its income to work as soon as possible. The £4.4 million surplus has been earmarked for projects that extend beyond the end of the financial year.
Funds held for specific purposes, at £31.8 million, include money required for future working capital and a ‘threat fund’ to minimise the risk of interruptions to our highest priority work programmes.
Free financial reserves are held at a modest level to maximise the funds available for immediate conservation needs. We hold just 10 weeks’ worth of expenditure in free financial reserves.
The Statement of net assets includes Nature reserves held at their original cost, less depreciation where applicable, and the defined benefit Pension liability. The net liability of the scheme, at £67.8 million, increased due to a higher actuarial valuation of our liabilities as long term interest rate projections continued to fall during the year.
The scheme is relatively immature in that there are significantly more contributing members than pensioners; therefore the net liability of the scheme will not crystallise for some years and will fall as and when interest rates return to historical norms.
The additional cost of funding the liability over the period agreed with the Pension Trustees represents approximately 3 per cent of our annual income. The RSPB trustees do not consider the liability to represent a significant constraint over the use of financial reserves for the foreseeable future.
The last full actuarial review was completed in July 2010. The actions taken as a result of this review were a reduction in benefits accruing of around 25 per cent and a sharing with scheme members of the risk of future increases in longevity.
The final salary section of the scheme was closed to new entrants in February 2007. The assets and liabilities of the pension scheme are reviewed every three years, following which a plan is agreed with the Pension Scheme Trustees to make good any deficit. At the time the accounts were approved at the 2013 AGM, the most recent review was still underway.
