Sciaena is a Portuguese-based non profit organization with national and international scope, which was created in 2006 by University of Algarve Marine Biology and Fisheries students. It envisions a healthy marine environment and an informed population engaged in its conservation. Sciaena’s mission is to promote the improvement of the marine environment by encouraging the sustainability of fisheries and other forms of use and minimizing the impacts of pollution through knowledge, education, communication and political intervention. It has been developing its work in partnership with various social actors - other NGOs, local authorities, educational and research institutions, among others, always inviting the public and interested stakeholders to take part in its activities. Mostly dependent on voluntaries in the early years and even now, since 2013 Sciaena has registered a stable level of revenues and personnel dedicated to the NGO. Since April 2013 and through a consultancy with The Pew Environment Group on Fisheries Policy and Research, Sciaena has worked on the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform and is now accompanying its implementation, as well as deep sea and tuna fisheries legislation. Since April 2016 Sciaena is a grantee of Funding Fish, with a project that aims at implementing the CFP and improving the environmental performance of fisheries in Portugal and the South Western Waters of the European Union. In 2018 Sciaena received grants from The Ocean Foundation and Fundação Oceano Azul, to work in Atlantic tuna conservation and sea horse conservation in Ria Formosa, Portugal.
In 2019 Sciaena secured considerable additional funding, from Oceans 5 and Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, to engage in Marine Protected Areas, Fisheries Control and Marine Litter, as well as funding from the Faro City Hall. In 2020 Sciaena secured aditional funding from Recircula and the Algarve Cultural Regional Directorate.
