    Communication activities

Styrenics Circular Solutions (SCS) has created four separate working groups to heighten the efficiency and reach of SCS activities:

    Working Group 1 | Technology
Objectives: Identify and accelerate the deployment of the most effective recycling technologies

Working Group 2 | Waste Streams & Sorting Technologies
Objectives: Facilitate the delivery of polystyrene post-consumer waste feedstock to the optimal recycling technologies; and build up an SCS knowledge base through studies, cooperation with regional partners and learning from related initiatives

    Working Group 3 | Communications
Objectives: Raise the profile of Styrenics Circular Solutions and its commitment among key stakeholders, including policymakers, authorities and brand owners

Working Group 4 | Circular Design
Objectives: To develop and coordinate throughout the circular value chain the understanding, methods and protocols for evaluating circular design criteria of PS (°) objects, aiming to maximize their circularity via optimal sorting and recycling towards the same or other high end applications.
Due to its importance as circular feedstock, packaging is a priority focus of circular design; with the closed loop yoghurt pot – to – yoghurt pot as key objective.
Second priority of circular design is to facilitate, stimulate and steer open loop circularity between different PS applications, in order to maximize the overall uptake of and high value outlets for all recycled PS.

(°) ‘PS’ includes XPS and EPS

    Other activities

In order to build up a thriving circular economy for styrenics, Styrenics Circular Solutions and its members are taking action to maximise the recycling rates of post-consumer styrenics by:

    • Driving the scale-up of innovative technologies to recycle styrenics back into high-quality applications, even for food contact

    • Creating a market pull away from incineration and landfill towards game-changing recycling solutions for styrenics

    • Engaging with the whole value chain to deliver upon the unique capacity of styrenics for full circularity

SCS believes that game-changing technologies and partner-driven solutions lie at the heart of a thriving circular economy for styrenics and their significant contribution to the recycling targets of the European Commission.
