    Goals / Remit

The German Marshall Fund (GMF) and its Brussels-based partner organization, the Transatlantic Foundation (TF), promote greater cooperation and understanding between the United States of America and Europe on transatlantic and global issues. Founded in 1972 as a non-partisan, nonprofit organization through a gift from Germany as a permanent memorial to Marshall Plan assistance, GMF maintains a strong presence on both sides of the Atlantic. GMF works on issues critical to transatlantic interests in the 21st century, including the future of democracy, security and defense, geopolitics and the rise of China, and technology and innovation. By drawing on and fostering a community of people with diverse life experiences and political perspectives, GMF pursues its mission by driving the policy debate through cutting edge analysis and convening, fortifying civil society, and cultivating the next generation of leaders on both sides of the Atlantic.

Like all U.S. nonprofits, the audit schedule is linked to our fiscal year. GMF’s fiscal year runs from 1 June to May 31, and our annual audit will promptly commence in mid-July 2020. The audit fieldwork (onsite review and direct information-gathering and testing by our external audit firm) is usually completed by the end of August. During September, the resulting report documents will be drafted by our Finance team, and will then be reviewed by the auditors for the end of the month. We then present the audit report to the governing board of GMF for approval in October. We will upload the completed report and statement of financial position within one business day of approval by the board.

The Transatlantic Foundation is the beneficiary of several grants from European Union bodies:
