    Goals / Remit

The Regional Environmental Center for Central and Eastern Europe (REC) is an international organisation with a mission to assist in solving environmental problems. The Center fulfils this mission by promoting cooperation among governments, non-governmental organisations, businesses and other environmental stakeholders, and by supporting the free exchange of information and public participation in environmental decision making.

The REC was established in 1990 by the United States, the European Commission and Hungary. Today, the REC is legally based on a Charter signed by the governments of 30 countries and the European Commission. The REC has its head office in Szentendre, Hungary, and country offices and field offices in 17 beneficiary countries, which are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Turkey.

The REC actively participates in key global, regional and local processes and contributes to environmental and sustainability solutions within and beyond its country office network, transferring transitional knowledge and experience to countries and regions.

    Main EU files targeted

The Regional Environmental Center (REC) places great emphasis on applying the best environmental practices in its daily operations. The main policy document of the REC, the Administration Manual states that: “All activities of the Center shall be implemented in such a way that the integration of environmental considerations has a high priority. In its daily operations, the REC shall act as a model office for good environmental practice and environmental protection at the working place, as much as possible”.

Without giving a full picture on the application of the above principle in the daily operations of the organization, we can list some areas where the concern for the environment is reflected in REC’s operations:

    1. REC’s travel policy stipulates that the most cost efficient and environmentally friendly means of transport should be used.
    2. REC publications are produced on environmentally friendly paper
    3. Most of our printers are double sided
    4. Electronic communication is the preferred option in the organization
    5. Waste is collected separately in 5 streams for recycling and composting
    6. A working group called “Greening the REC” is operational in the organization, with the purpose of raising the awareness of the staff and sharing good practices
    7. Environmentally friendly cleaning materials are in use
    8. REC’s 600 m2 conference center has been turned into a zero-emission building in 2008 (based on ground heat and solar energy), the first of this kind in Central and Eastern Europe.
