    Goals / Remit

    “The Smile of the Child”, in Greek “To Xαμόγελο του Παιδιού”, is the largest internationally recognized non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization in Greece in the critical field of child protection, search and rescue of missing children, support of children and families with children in need, as well as free public health service for children, both in prevention and treatment.

    The Organization was founded by a 10-year-old boy, Andreas Yannopoulos, before he succumbed to brain cancer in late 1995. His father Costas Yannopoulos, President of the Board of Directors, inspired by the wish of well-being for all children in the world, expressed by his son has gradually led “The Smile” to what it is today: Over 25 years of action “The Smile” has made the difference for more than 1.480.000 children and their families in Greece.

    The 505 personnel (social workers, psychologists, ambulance staff, etc.) and the 3.644 active volunteers create a substantial impact, earning “The Smile of the Child” both nationwide and international recognition. This recognition is reflected in a series of MOUs with national authorities and institutions and active, even leading positions of “The Smile of the Child” in international fora.

    In order to achieve this goal, the organization implements wide range of programs and activities for the welfare and protection of physical and psychological health, as well as for the safety of thousands of children in need in Greece, on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year.

    The summary of the activities of “The Smile of the Child” involves:
    - Operation of 12 Centers for Direct Social Intervention nationwide
    - Operation of the National Helpline for Children SOS 1056
    - Operation of the European Hotline for Missing Children 116000
    - Operation of the European Helpline for Children and Adolescents 116111
    - Operation of 6 call centers across Greece interconnected as 1
    - Operation of 11 Homes where hundreds of our children are raised
    - Operation of 3 Daycare Homes for families with children in crisis
    - Operation of the only Day Center in Greece named “The House of the Child” that provides therapy to children victims of any form of violence
    - Activation and coordination of the Amber Alert Hellas
    - Operation of the Search and Rescue Team “Thanassis Makris”, a unique and specialized volunteer group for the search and rescue of missing children
    - Activation of a Mobile Operational Unit for the emergency cases of Missing Children
    - Operation of “ODYSSEAS”, the 1st Mobile Lab of Information, Education and Technology in Greece, which also serves as a Mobile Command Center in emergency situations in the country
    - Operation of 3 Mobile Units of Preventive Medicine, including the Mobile Multi-medical Unit “Hippocrates” for the provision of preventative medicals exams to children
    - Operation of 7 Mobile Medical Units of Intensive Care for newborns and children based in Athens, Thessaloniki, Mytilini (Lesvos) and Heraklion (Crete)
    - Operation of Mobile Medical Pediatric Units for the Care of Children at Home in Athens and Thessaloniki
    - Operation of 14 Support Centers for Families with Children across Greece
    - Operation of a Management and Delivery Center of products at the facilities of the Central Market and Fishery Organization (OKAA) in Athens

    Communication activities

    -A nationwide campaign against the Sexual Abuse of Children with the slogan “It remains a Secret” #Meneimystiko was first launched by “The Smile of the Child” in 2017. In 2019, on the 19th of November, our Organization held a press conference addressing the issue and asking to tackle this phenomenon and take the needed measures.
    -“The Smile of the Child” honored International Youth Day 2019 by participating in the global campaign of the United Nations. The theme of International Youth Day 2019 was “Transforming education”, which was celebrated by the young volunteers of YouSmile.
    -The third awards ceremony of the YouSmile European Student Volunteer Network took place on 27 June 2019 , honoring students who give the best example to other children and adults. Students, teachers, parents and children filled the venue, where the 3rd YouSmile Awards were presented with the main slogan: ‘Children can make a better world! Let’s trust them!!’
    -“The Smile of the Child”, for the 17th consecutive year and on the occasion of the 25th of May – International Missing Children’s Day, organized a meeting, in the framework of the EU-funded “SAFE” project titled ‘Missing Children in Greece and in Europe, actions and initiatives for preventing and tackling of the phenomenon’.
    -On the occasion of the 6th of March, National School Anti-bullying Day, every year “The Smile of the Child" carries out an awareness raising campaign under the coordination of the European Student Volunteer Network YouSmile with the goal to mobilize students, parents and teachers. More specifically, all the actions are uploaded on milatora.gr and highlighted via the social media of YouSmile.
    -“The Smile of the Child”, humanitarian partner of the European Commission DG ECHO (with Framework Partnership Agreement), presented on the 15th of March 2019 the final results of the project “Direct and Holistic Medical and Psychosocial Intervention for Refugee and Migrant Children in Danger in Greece”.
    - “The Smile of the Child” united its forces with the Greek and international scientific community in organizing the International Conference entitled: “Child Sexual Abuse: Next Steps in the Holistic Support of Children” on, the 28th of February 2019 in Athens.
    -On the occasion of the Tempo Forte Italy-Greece 2019 initiative, the Italian Embassy in Athens in collaboration with "The Smile of the Child" and "Telefono Azzurro" organized an event on Tuesday, 22nd of October. The two organizations, agreed to cooperate on critical issues, such as child participation, online safety and the fate of children in the context of migration.
    -On the 20th of November, student volunteers of “The Smile of the Child” celebrated in Athens the 30th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. The “302010 campaign –give me the Right to Smile’ was kicked off in an event held this Universal Children’s Day in Athens at the premises of the Hellenic Ministry of Education & Religious Affairs.
    -On the 2nd of December 2019 “The Smile of the Child” along with Chris Newlin, Executive Director of the US-based National Child Advocacy Center organized educational seminars in 3 cities, emphasizing the urgent need to establish an integrated framework of child friendly justice in Greece.
    -“The Smile of the Child" was awarded at the BRAVO SUSTAINABILITY AWARDS 2019, held on the 18th December 2019.
    - On the occasion of its 24th Anniversary, The Smile of the Child conducted a nationwide public opinion survey with the kind support of Focus Bari. Ιt was presented that, "The Smile of the Child" is widely known in Greece (97%) and is recognized as the most reliable non-governmental institution in the country; Furthermore, 95% of Greeks believe that the Organization offers substantial work to the Greek society and 79% believe that the Organization is active in covering needs not met by other entities or agencies.

    -In the framework of the European Territorial Cooperation Programme “Interreg V-A Greece Bulgaria” 2014-2020, the Organization “The Smile of the Child”, in the role of Lead partner, is implementing the project entitled “Integrated Territorial Synergies for Children Health and Protection ΙΙ - INTERSYC II”.
