    Goals / Remit

    ‘The Smile of the Child’, in Greek “To Xαμόγελο του Παιδιού”, is the largest internationally recognized non-profit, Non-Governmental Organization in Greece in the critical field of child protection, search and rescue of missing children, support of children and families with children in need, as well as free public health service for children, both in prevention and treatment.

    The Organization was created in 1996 by Costas Yannopoulos, inspired by the wish of well-being for all children in the world, expressed by his ten-year old son Andreas before he succumbed to brain cancer. Over its 20 years of activity ‘The Smile of the Child’ has made a difference for more than one million children and their families, without distinction of background, origin, religion or any other criterion. The 452 personnel (social workers, psychologists, ambulance staff, etc.) and the 2.461 active volunteers create a substantial impact, earning ‘The Smile of the Child’ both nationwide and international recognition. This recognition is reflected in a series of MOUs with national authorities and institutions and active, even leading positions of ‘The Smile of the Child’ in international fora, as shown in the list in annex.

    In order to achieve this goal, the organization implements wide range of programs and activities for the welfare and protection of physical and psychological health, as well as for the safety of thousands of children in need in Greece, on a 24/7 basis, 365 days a year.

    The summary of the activities of “The Smile of the Child” involves:
    - Operation of 10 community homes in Greece where children are referred upon the order of the public prosecutor for minors
    - Operation of 3 day care centers for children in need of psychological and/or social support
    o Operation of the National Helpline for Children “SOS 1056”
    - Operation of the 116000 – European hotline for missing children
    - Operation of the 116111-European Helpline for Children and Adolescents
    - Coordination of a child alert system AMBER ALERT HELLAS (with the cooperation of public and private institutions).
    - Emergency intervention in cases of children in danger by operating the National Centre for Immediate Social Intervention.
    - Operating National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children.
    - Development of the South-eastern European Centre for Missing and Exploited Children (SEEC)
    - Mobile Medical Units & State-of-the-art ambulances in the emergency service’s (EKAV) disposal nationwide, for the safe transport of children and newborns.
    - Preventive Medicine and Dentistry at schools and isolated areas nationwide, carried out by the organization’s mobile medical units
    - Information, prevention, and awareness programmes for children, parents, and teachers in schools across the country, as well as in a mobile unit ODYSSEUS
    - Support in necessary goods children and families with welfare problems

    Communication activities

    The Smile of the Child as coordinator of the European Anti-bullying Network held its 3rd International Conference in Malta in June 2016 in the presence of the Her Excellency, the President of Malta, Ms. Marie Louise Coleiro Preca. The conference brought together EAN member organizations, public officials and institutional actors from Malta, academia, as well as professionals active in the field of child protection and children’s rights. The end of the conference spread an urgent call on Europe and society to deal with the ever rising problem of bullying launching the Malta Declaration Process against Bullying.

    Representatives of Missing Children Europe (MCE) and Child Helpline International (CHI) had the opportunity to visit refugee camps across Greece as well as the actions of their Greek member “The Smile of the Child” for refugees. The aim of this visit was to acquire a direct experience from the conditions on the ground and, mainly, the existing needs and gaps in the protection of refugee and migrant children in Greece. On this occasion, a press conference was organized at “The Smile of the Child’s” premises in Northern Greece.

    In the framework of the EU-funded project “Minimizing violence through quality control: Monitoring & Evaluating 116000 Hotlines to prevent, support and protect missing children”, coordinated by Missing Children Europe (MCE), the 116 000 European Hotline for Missing Children operated in Greece by “The Smile of the Child” was evaluated among other 116 000 lines across different Member States. The Greek 116 000 line received the maximum evaluation (100%) and standards.

    “The Smile of the Child” contributed to the Conference of INGOs of the Council of Europe in an urgent debate on the treatment of migrants, refugees and NGOs defending their rights, in an event that was held on 23 and 24 June 2016 in Strasbourg.

    On the International Missing Children’s Day, on 25 May, “The Smile of the Child” hosted an international meeting in 2016 in an effort to send a global message of hope and solidarity. The event was held under the aegis of HE the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Prokopios Pavlopoulos.

    Microsoft Hellas in collaboration with “The Smile of the Child” held a special event on the occasion of Safer Internet Day on 10th of February in order to raise awareness among young people on safety issues. More than 120 highschool students took part in an interactive dialogue concerning safe internet and focusing on the use of social media.

    On the occasion of 6th of March, National Anti-bullying Day in Greece, “The Smile of the Child” ran a national Anti-bullying Week and raised awareness on bullying nationwide among children, young people, parents, teachers and the general public.

    The European Helpline for Children and Adolescents 116 111 was inaugurated by “The Smile of the Child” during a press briefing held in Athens, Greece. The operation of the 116 111 is incorporated at Child Helpline International Foundation (CHI).

    The first joint EU Child Safety Summit of Google and Facebook attended “The Smile of the Child” in their Headquarters in Dublin on 14 and 15 April 2016. “The Smile of the Child” exchanged good practices and its various initiatives to keep children safe in a digital environment on national and international levels.

    “The Smile of the Child”, in the framework of its close cooperation with the Council of Europe, honored this year the European Day on the Protection of Children against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse. As in every year, the Organization run a nationwide campaign as part of the global initiative “19 Days of Activism Prevention Abuse and Violence against Children/Youth” of the Women's World Summit Foundation (WWSF) by raising awareness among more than 70 organization across the world among children, parents, teachers and the general public.
