    Goals / Remit

VERBUND is the largest producer and transporter of electricity in Austria and one of the leading hydropower producers in Europe. In 2010, VERBUND achieved an annual turnover of 3.3 billion Euro with around 3,000 employees. VERBUND focuses on its core business "electricity" and is active along the entire electrical value chain from the turbine to the power outlet. About 90 % of its electricity generation originates from hydropower, around 10 % is produced in thermal power plants in Austria.

VERBUND operates Austria's supra-regional high-voltage grid which extends over a distance of 3,500 km (route kilometres) and accommodates lines with a total length of approx. 6,800 kilometres. This grid forms the backbone of Austria's electricity supply, enabling the supra-regional, domestic and international exchange of energy between producers and consumers and serves to ensure the stable provision of energy to the underlying distribution grids.

VERBUND is also an active trader on the European electricity markets. VERBUND traded more than one and a half times the volume of physical electricity consumption in Austria in 2010. Our largest sales markets outside Austria are Germany, France and Italy. We trade on all major electricity exchanges in Europe. We supply electricity to public utilities and large industrial customers. Moreover, we actively trade in green certificates and CO2 emission rights.

In terms of sales VERBUND is operating in the Austrian end-customer segment since July 2005. Currently, VERBUND supplies 100 % clean hydroelectricity to approximately 220,000 household customers in Austria. 25% of Austrian industry is served by VERBUND.

Internationally, VERBUND is active in a total of more than 20 countries in the areas of generation and trade. The international core markets are Germany (in 2009 VERBUND acquired 13 run-of-river power plants in Bavaria), Turkey (50% share in energy provider "EnerjiSA"), Italy (45% share in "Sorgenia", the largest private electricity and gas company in Italy), France (46% share in "Poweo", the largest private electricity supplier in France) and Albania (50% share in Energij Ashta).
