    Goals / Remit

    WIN is a registered incorporated charitable organisation based in Scotland with a committed international Board of Trustees and an engaged pool of members and associates. WIN’s mission is to protect the public interest by protecting whistleblowers worldwide.

    WIN facilitates cross-border sharing of expertise and supports members to develop international policy, institutional and legislative solutions that bolster their efforts to defend and support whistleblowers as a democratic and human rights accountability mechanism.

    Advocating for EU support for strong transposition of the EU Directive on the protection of persons reporting on breaches of Union law, DIRECTIVE EU 2019/1937 in the 27 Member States, ensuring strong compliance once transposed, and reforms where necessary to properly protect whistleblowers at the EU level. Advocating for protections in related areas to whistleblower protection, including safeguarding civil society, protecting independent journalism and media freedom, and supporting whistleblowers, human rights defenders and NGOs from abusive laws suits and other forms of retaliation.

    WIN’s ED co-organised panel with European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) and Free Press Unlimited (FPU) hosted by MEP at the European Paraliament.     WIN launched EU Whistleblowing Meter (now the EU Whistleblowing Monitor) – an on-line platform to track the transposition of the EU Directive Directive 2019/1937 across 27 EU Member States.     WIN corresponded with MEPs seeking support for oil-industry corruption whistleblower Jonathan Taylor detained in Croatia since August 2020 on an interpol red notice alert which WIN believes is an abuse of the legal system to retaliate against a whistleblower.

    WIN co-organised seminar to launch joint TI/WIN report “Are EU governments taking Whistleblower Protection Seriously? Transposition of Directive on Whistleblowing.” Deputy Head of Unit, DG Justice at the European Commission joined panel to listen to concerns of civil society and discuss Commission role in supporting full compliance, including via Expert Committee.
