    Goals / Remit

The Academic Cooperation Association (ACA) has a double mission. First, it serves as a platform for its members for mutual learning and the exchange of good practice, for joint projects and other joint activities, and for advocating the members’ interests vis-à-vis the European institutions. Second, it is a think tank on issues of internationalisation and innovation in higher educations. In this capacity, ACA is engaged in research into internationalisation of higher education, producing studies and evaluations.
ACAs members are national-level organisations which promote and fund internationalisation of higher education. Their activities include the delivery of student and staff mobility programmes (mostly including the Erasmus+ Programme,) the promotion and marketing of their countries’ higher education worldwide, curricular internationalisation, and the provision of policy advice, etc. ACA was created in 1993 as a non-governmental organisation (AISBL/VZW) according to Belgian law.

    Communication activities

ACA conducts four events per year (ACA European Policy Seminar, Strategic Summit, Thematic Policy Event and a conference with one of the members). More information on the events is available here: https://aca-secretariat.be/events/list-events/
ACA regularly publishes various policy inputs and position papers which can be accessed here: https://aca-secretariat.be/publications/list-publication/
Some of the previous publications include the study for the European Parliament on the first years of Erasmus+ implementation, a report on admissions to master-level programmes in Europe, the third study on English-medium programmes in Europe (English-Taught Programmes in European Higher Education. The State of Play in 2014), A forthcoming study, conducted with our German member DAAD for the European Parliament, will aim to critically assess the differences between quality assurance systems and university ranking schemes, and the pros and cons of the two distinct approaches for assessing/enhancing/indicating the quality of university teaching and research. In 1999, ACA started its own monograph series. The ACA Papers on International Cooperation in Education were an immediate success. All of the books are standard reading in educational internationalisation and most of them emerged from ACA's projects in the field of analysis and research. Since its landmark study EURODATA (2006), ACA has produced a number of relevant studies on mobility (such as MOWIN, STiME, MPPC). ACA has also produced 3 major studies on English-medium instruction in Europe.
All ACA publications can be accessed and downloaded from our website: http://www.aca-secretariat.be/index.php?id=25

    Other activities

ACA participates in national-level meetings organised by the European Commission (e.g. Western Balkans Ministerial meetings, South Med policy dialogues, meetings of national agencies, and meetings on relevant topics in the developments of EU programmes on education and research, etc.), conducts research for the European Parliament on EU programmes and policies, and follows the work of EP committees.
